– KNOXVILLE, Iowa (May 13, 2014) – Jamie Ball earned his second straight top 10 at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday for White Lightning Motorsports.
“After hot laps I was the quickest overall and didn’t change that much,” he said. “I went back out for our group qualifying and missed the top eight by about a half a tenth.”
Ball qualified ninth quickest and was less than three hundredths of a second out of timing in eight, which would have put him on the pole of the 360 division main event as long as he advanced through his heat race. Ball did just that, finishing fourth after starting on the outside of the second row.
That lined up on the inside of the fifth row of the feature.
“I had a bad start and missed the bottom a little in turns one and two,” he said. “I fell back to 11th or 12th and slowly worked my way back into seventh. Considering the start I got it wasn’t too bad. Top 10s are something to be happy about, but we’re always wanting more.”
Following the early miscue, Ball rallied to finish seventh. He now ranks sixth in the Knoxville Raceway championship standings.
In 410 action, Larry Ball Jr. fell behind the eight ball after ignition issues plagued him in qualifying.
“In hot laps he wasn’t too bad,” Jamie Ball said. “He was fairly close to the top guys. Then he had a mag box start to go bad in the three-lap qualifying. It kept cutting out and wouldn’t rev over 8,000 RPMs. It took his speed away.”
Ball Jr. qualified 27th, which started him seventh in his heat race. After the team changed the mag, Ball Jr. competed for one of the five lock-in positions during his heat race before setting for a sixth-place finish.
That relegated him to the B Main, where he was once again in contention to earn a transfer. Following a late restart, Ball Jr. slid Scott Winters for the final transfer position entering turn one on the final lap. The duo drag raced down the backstretch. However, Winters had the preferred line and edged Ball Jr. for fourth place.
“He was right there and definitely close,” Jamie Ball said. “It was a bummer to not make the A Main.”
Devin Kline was unable to compete in 305ci competition because of the mechanical issues from the previous week. He is hoping to get back on the track within the next couple of weeks.
Ball and Ball Jr. are set to return to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday for the next points race.
