Abbottstown, PA — (June 28, 2014) — Kyle Moody recovered from a rough start to come back in claim his first career 410 sprint car feature win and the $7,000 top prize in night #2 of PA Speedweek at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
After dropping to fifth on the first lap, Moody passed both USAC invader Brady Bacon and Tim Glatfelter on laps eight and nine to climb to his original starting spot.
While running third, Moody saw second-place Glenndon Forsythe bring out the red flag with a 360 airborne spin in turns three and four of lap 18. During the race stoppage, race-long leader Adam Wilt went to the pits with a flat right rear, placing Moody in the lead for the restart.
“God works in mysterious ways, doesn’t he?” said a jubilant Moody after his wing dance in victory lane, “What are the chances of losing both cars running in front of me? And not getting caught up in it was just amazing!.”
“On the start I totally fumbled up, and all those cars got by me…and I thought ‘Shoot, I don’t think I’m going to be able to get back up there,” said Moody, “There were a lot of good cars up there and I knew I had to bide my time. I knew I had a good car all night tonight. We were fighting some engine problems that were unknown, and I decided to put my head down and not worry about it…and keep running like we did.”
On his tail for the restart were Glatfelter and Bacon. Bacon caught Glatfelter for the runner-up spot with nine laps to go, and closed on the leader. But it was Moody’s night, as the ISSC/Kanson Electronics/Keener Coatings #99M crossed .72 seconds in front at the finish.
“It means everything,” said Moody of his Lincoln win, “This has been my dream since I was eight years old when I started coming here and this is it right here. A big thanks to Cory Laucks, who has made this thing a rocket ship this year. And thanks to my mom and dad and girlfriend for their support, and to a great crew. This is amazing!”
“It was great racing with Brady. He has a lot more seat time than I do. I saw him creep up to third and then second. I was watching for him. I was trying to stay smooth. That curb was crazy tonight. You could overdrive it in a heartbeat. I was watching the guys in front of me. It was slick. I just buckled down and held on.”
Seventh-starting Ryan Smith caught Glatfelter for third with two laps to go, and 23rd-starting Brian Montieth passed Glatfelter on the last lap for fourth. Sixth through tenth behind Glatfelter were Austin Hogue, 20th-starting Brent Marks, Lance Dewease, 22nd-starting Alan Krimes, and Gerard McIntyre, Jr.
A slowing track during time trials forced several top drivers to the rear of the feature field after coming out late for time trials.
Heats for the 410 sprinters were won by Wilt, Glatfelter, Moody, and Forsythe, with Steve Owings winning the B-Main. McIntyre set fast time over the 34-car field with a one lap time of 13.508 seconds (99.941 MPH).
Brian Montieth’s amazing run from 23rd to fourth put him in the PA Speedweek points lead after two shows with 259 points. The remainder of the top ten after night #2 are: 2. Alan Krimes (226), 3. Ryan Smith (216), 4. Brent Marks (205), 5. Greg Hodnett (199), 6. Danny Dietrich (196), 7. Lance Dewease (191), 8. Cory Haas (188), 9. Brady Bacon (176), 10. Kyle Moody (167).
After numerous second-place finishes, defending series champ Bob Stough of East Berlin scored his first career Lincoln win in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature. Stough started third, led the first lap, yielded to fourth-starting Harlon Leppo on laps two and three, reclaimed the lead for good on lap four.
A race-long multi-car battle for the top spot ended with Jason Rochelle crossing second, with Lucas Montgomery, Bill Diehl, and Leppo rounding out the top five.
Heats for the 32 Central PA Legends were won by Diehl, Montgomery, and Leppo, with Travis McClelland winning the consolation.
Next Saturday, July 5th, with the 410 sprinters traveling for PA Speedweek activities, the 358 Sprints will headline the evening’s activities with their annual 358 SPRINT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, a 25-lapper paying $1,500 to win.
