“ORANGE OUT” FOR KEVIN WARD, JR.
The management and staff of Ohsweken Speedway wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, fans, and fellow racing competitors of Kevin Ward, Jr., who passed away following an accident in the Empire Super Sprints event held at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday, August 3. We are asking everyone to join our friends from the Empire Super Sprints and Brewerton Speedway in wearing orange to Ohsweken Speedway this Friday in honour of Kevin, and in support of his family. #13 decals will also be available to all competitors to place on their cars this Friday. We were fortunate to see Kevin in competition at Ohsweken on several occasions, including several strong performances in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, and his 2nd place finish in the Empire Super Sprints event last Friday, August 2. Please keep Kevin’s family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS ART HILL MEMORIAL 42
The annual “Art Hill Memorial 42” is the biggest, longest, and highest-paying event of the season for Ohsweken’s Mini Stock racers, with a feature race more than twice the distance of their regular races, and a $1,000 winner’s prize on the line. The race honours Art Hill, who suffered a fatal brain aneurysm while competing in his #42 machine at Ohsweken in 1999. Past Art Hill Memorial winners include well-known Ohsweken names such as Rick Emberson, Lee Winger, Robbie Rounce, Marc Hallett, Dave Bailey, Mitch Brown, Trevor Goulding, Abel Castelein, and Karl Sault, while Mike Taylor won the 2013 Art Hill Memorial 42 driving a car owned by Dave Bailey.
Tyler Lafantaisie leads the Mini Stock standings at Ohsweken heading into the special event, with Rookie of the Year standings leader Mark Bazuin 2nd in the overall standings. Team 81 (Alex Schuts and Lee Hils), Team 66 (Brandon and Jon Janssens), Robin Elliott, Kathi Dickie, Team 79 (Steve and Dan Miller), Jason Lungaro, Team 55 (Rob and Kevin Slater), and Lucas Lubin make up the remainder of the top 10.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Glenn Styres is atop the 360 Sprint Car championship standings by 32 points over Mitch Brown as the championship chase enters the final month. 2011 and 2013 champion Jim Huppunen is still in the hunt as well, as he sits 3rd, 13 points behind Brown. Shane Ross, Kyle Patrick, Todd Hoddick, Dave Dykstra, Keith Dempster, Chris Steele, and Jamie Turner also hold spots in the top 10. Rookie of the Year standings leader Cory Turner is 12th in the overall standings.
STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Ryan Hunsinger is still the Crate Sprint Car championship standings leader after his 4th win of the season last Friday, but Aaron Turkey continues to race neck and neck with Ryan, and is just 27 points behind. Jake Brown is in 3rd place, 52 points behind Hunsinger, while Mike Thorne, Josh Shantz, Mark Czuba, Paul Lang, Brad Herron, Tyler Hendricks, and Kyle Durnin make up the rest of the top 10.
AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
The Thunder Stock championship chase is the most competitive of the 5 weekly divisions to this point in the season, and it got even tighter last Friday. Dave Silverthorn, Jr. took over the lead when Wyatt Van Wart dropped out of last week’s feature race with mechanical problems, but Van Wart is now in the 2nd spot, just 17 points behind. Lee Winger is 3rd, only 7 points behind Van Wart, while August 8 winner Chris Dickie is 4th, just 7 points behind Winger. Dave Bailey holds the 5th spot, followed by Rookie of the Year standings leader Chase Hess, Bill Bleich, Jr., Ryan Dinning, Bryce Richardson, and Karl Sault.
GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Patrick Abrahamsson got his first Bomber feature win last Friday, but is not in championship contention as he didn’t compete in the first few races of the season. 2013 champ Dusty DeBoer continues to finish in the top 5 consistently, and remains at the top of the championship standings, followed by Joe DeBoer, Max Chechalk, Ashton Reekie, Gillian Hils, Clinton Nicholls, Gerald Burnham, Paul Longboat, Tim Nuell, and Team 1210 (Thomas Booker and Derek Dwyer).
