Attica, OH — (August 30, 2014) — Dale Blaney gave his daughter Leah a fantastic 19th birthday present Saturday at Attica Raceway Park – a victory.
The Hartford, Ohio driver got by Rob Chaney with five laps to go and went on to score his 13th University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions feature win of 2014 to close out the track’s season on Baumann Auto Group Night. The previous night the Tony Kennedy owned team had experimented with a different chassis and decided to put another car together for Saturday’s event and it paid off.
The victory is the second most All Star wins in a season for Blaney – he won 17 in 1996 – and runs his career total to an amazing 112 with the series. The victory was the fourth win of 2014 at Attica for “The Low Rider” and runs his career total to 21 at the track to move into third on the track’s all-time win list. Blaney leads all drivers in UNOH All Star wins at Attica with 15 victories.
“I was as good as what he was (Chaney)…it’s hard being behind a guy. He was kind of running where I wanted to in one and two and three and four he was taking up some ground. He had a really good car. It’s bitter sweat for me. He’s my best buddy out here. We talk all the time. He’s been going really, really, really good. I can see he has a lot of confidence. I love to win races…he’s going win a lot here. Those guys are going pretty good,” said Blaney beside his Kennedy Cattle/Penske Shocks/Ti22 Performance/GF1 Chassis/Tom’s Sewer and Septic Service backed #14k.
“We switched cars from last night…put this one together. I just didn’t feel comfortable with the other one. I told George (Fisher, crew chief) after the race ‘my car is back.’ Awful proud of all the guys. Tony is putting together a great team. We’ve had unbelievable success in his first year as an owner. Just looking forward to the rest of the races. Looking forward to getting back to Fremont in a couple of weeks…looking forward to some outlaw races. George has this thing dialed in,” added Blaney.
For Millersburg, Ohio’s Rob Chaney, running second after leading 23 of the 40 laps was bittersweet as well. He looked like he had the race in hand when the caution flew with seven laps to go and Blaney pounced soon after.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. I’m happy to run second. We got beat by the heavy weight champ. If you give him (Blaney) that many opportunities he’s going to find a way and he did. He does what he does to everybody…to outlaws…it doesn’t matter, he finds a way,” said Chaney beside his Stan Cortad Racing #9x.
“Our guys have worked real hard. We struggled really badly early in the year and we have this car rolling now and have a lot of confidence in it,” added Chaney.
Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan would get by Byron Reed the final two laps to score the third place finish.
“I screwed up early and let some guys get by me and it really cost us there for awhile. No body had anything for Dale. Him and George had that thing rolling from the drop of the green so you have to congratulate them. It feels good to come back and get third after we struggled so badly last night,” said Duncan of his Motorcity Auto Transport/Wolfden Products/Industrial Special Powder Coating/Gressman Powersports backed #22.
Keith Berner and Shane McLoughlin battled side by side the first 16 laps of the 25-lap Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature. Unfortunately a lapped car spun right in front of McLoughlin and collected him, ending the fun. Berner would drive to his fourth career Attica win, the first of the season for the Millersburg, Ohio driver at “Ohio Finest Racing” speedplant. He announced in victory lane this was his last year of driving as he was retiring at season’s end.
“We were running so hard…it just went my way there with that lapped car. I knew it was going to be pretty dicey and Shane was running really good tonight and things just went my way. I guess you have to have some luck sometimes,” said Berner beside his Bud’s Place/AccuForce Shock Dyno/Village Motors/Massillon Transmissions backed #18.
“This is my third win in only my eighth night out this season. This is it…I’ve been really fortunate to still be very competitive. My business has just been crazy. So I’m calling this my year-end tour,” added Berner.
With his third place finish Markham would wrap up the first ever Attica Raceway Park/NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series Challenge and the $1,500 payday.
In the Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints, Fremont, Ohio’s Bobby Clark executed a daring move, splitting the first and second place running cars of Ricky Peterson and Paul Weaver as they exited turn two with five laps to go to take the lead. Clark would them drive to his third win of the season at Attica. It was the 16th career victory for Clark at the track, moving him into a tie with Joe Keegan for fifth on the track’s all-time win list.
“I had my eye on them and I was catching them little by little. When I pulled in Dave (Foos,crew chief) said ‘nice job splitting them.’ I don’t remember doing it. He’s got the car real nice. I wish we would have started the season out with this thing,” said Clark referring to the change in chassis a couple of weeks ago.
“We started out kind of bad. We’ll take back to back wins and get more at Fremont,” said Clark of his Fremont Fence/Kistler Engines/Kear’s Speed Shop/Little Bar on the Prairie/B&L Plumbing/Nagy Equipment Sales/Big D’s Pizza/CRF Concrete/Willey’s Towing backed #18.
In the non-stop 15 lap Fremont Fence Dirt Truck feature Kent Brewer and Shawn Valenti battled each other tough the first 11 laps before Valenti used the high line to blast away to his fifth win of the season. Valenti now has 9 career Attica dirt trucks wins and is tied with Brian Arnold for fourth on the track’s all-time win list. He has 15 truck wins in total in 2014.
“I always try to get this thing hooked up on the cushion…wasn’t much left tonight but it was able to stick. I have to thank Kent for racing me clean. It’s been one hell of a year and I just keep thinking I’m going to wake up one of these days,” said Valenti beside his Craig Miller Trucking/Best Performance Motorsports/JP Enterprise/Daydream and Memories/KT Enterprise/Conrad Transportation/Burns Petroleum/Gressman Powersports backed #7b.
Duncan and Chaney would bring the field to green for the 40-lap All Star feature with Chaney gaining the upper hand with Cap Henry sliding into second and Duncan back to third. Henry would immediately challenge Chaney for the lead on lap two when the caution flew for a Caleb Armstrong spin in turn four.
On the restart Chaney would lead Henry, Duncan, Blaney, Danny Holtgraver, Sheldon Haudenschild, Randy Hannagan and Byron Reed. Henry would blast under Chaney in turns three and four to grab the lead on lap six with Blaney driving around Duncan for third a lap later.
The caution flew again on lap 11…unfortunately it was for leader Henry who spun in turn two. That handed the lead back to Chaney with Blaney, Sheldon Haudenschild, Duncan, Reed, Holtgraver and Reed in tow. When the green flew Blaney immediately put pressure on Chaney as Sheldon Haudenschild, Reed and Duncan put on a fantastic battle for third.
Henry would spin again on lap 14 to bring out the caution and he would retire to the pits. On the restart Chaney was able to pull away slightly from Blaney with Sheldon Haudenschild, Reed, Holtgraver, Duncan, Hannagan and Chris Andrews giving chase.
At the half-way point Blaney began closing again on Chaney with Haudenschild, Reed, Holtgraver and Duncan still battling for third. The leaders would encounter lapped traffic on lap 23, as Haudenschild slipped over the banking in turn two allowing Reed, Holtgraver and Duncan to get by.
With 15 laps to go, Chaney and Blaney were battling for the lead while Reed, Holtgraver and Duncan did the same for third. Just as things were heating up, Andrew Palker would stop on the back stretch bringing out the yellow. On the ensuing restart Holtgraver, who picked up the win the previous night, would stop with mechanical issues, ending his night.
When the green flew the battle between Chaney and Blaney continued with Reed, Duncan, Haudenschild and Andrews in pursuit. As the laps ticked off, it appeared Chaney had just enough to hold off Blaney. But, Hannagan would spin with seven laps left, giving Blaney the shot he needed.
On the restart Chaney and Blaney raced side by side with Blaney driving into the lead with five laps to go. Once in the lead Blaney pulled away from Chaney for the victory. Duncan would get around Reed on the white flag lap to take third with Reed and Andrews rounding out the top five.
McLoughlin and Ryan Markham would bring the late model field to green for their 25 lap feature with McLoughlin gaining the upper hand over Berner, Markham, Rocky Owens, Ryan Missler, Ross Nicastri, Matt Irey, John Bores and Steve Sabo. Tim Sabo would spin just after a lap was completed. On the restart John Bores would spin.
When the green flew McLoughlin and Berner raced side by side for the lead with Markham and Missler battling for third. John Bores and Mark Pollock would tangle with four laps in.
The yellow was only a temporary slow down of the fantastic battle that would ensue between McLoughlin and Berner. The pair would literally race door to door over the next seven laps while Markham and Missler did the same behind them.
Berner would lead by a bumper on laps 12 and 13 with McLoughlin edging back into the lead on laps 14 and 15. Just as they tried to get around the lapped machine of Doug Baird he would spin, collecting McLoughlin and ending his night.
On the restart Berner would lead but he could not shake Markham with Mike Bores charging into third with Missler, Irey and Cody Scott in tow. Berner would pull away the final six laps for the win. Bores would get by Markham with five laps to go to finish second with Markham, Irey and Missler rounding out the top five.
The 25 lap 305 feature saw Peterson and John Ivy bring the field to green with Peterson taking the lead as Weaver slipped into second. After a lap was completed Dean Jacobs would make impact with someone or something, causing damage to the front of his mount to bring out the yellow.
The ensuing restart saw Peterson lead Weaver, Ivy, Jason Keckler, Clark, Jim Taddeo and CJ Jones. Clark would drive into fourth on lap three and would take third two laps later. Just as Weaver was got around Peterson for the lead the caution flew for a Mike Moore spin, handing the top spot back to Peterson.
Peterson and Weaver would continue their side by side battle with Clark right in their tire tracks when the race resumed. That battle would be interrupted on lap 15 for a Gary Benjamin spin. When the green flew it was Peterson barely leading Weaver, Clark, Ivy, Keckler, Steve Rando and Taddeo.
With seven laps to go it was now a three car battle for the lead with Peterson, Weaver and Clark. Weaver would grab the top spot on lap 19 but as Peterson tried to fight back exiting turn two, the two separated just enough for Clark to split them and take the lead.
Benjamin would spin again with five laps to go and when the race resumed Clark would steadily pull away for the win with Weaver, Peterson, Rando and Ivy rounding out the top five.
Brian Arnold and Brewer brought the field to green for the 15 lap dirt truck feature with Brewer taking the lead over Dustin Keegan, Valenti, Arnold and Matt Foos. As Brewer pulled away slightly Keegan and Valenti were locked in a great battle for second with Foos, Arnold, Dana Fry and Cory Ward in pursuit.
Valenti would finally clear Keegan for second on lap six and immediately closed on Brewer. Valenti would rock around Brewer into the lead on lap eight but Brewer would continue to hound. Meanwhile Keegan and Foos battled hard for third.
With four laps to go Valenti was finally able to pull away from Brewer as Foos moved into third. Valenti would drive to the win over Brewer, Foos, Keegan and Fry.
