HOHENWALD, Tenn. (June 16, 2015) – Derek Hagar continued his recent hot streak last weekend when he rallied to his third feature victory during the last five races.
“We’ve had a real good confidence boost the last few races,” he said. “We’ve had some good success and I think it’s going to continue. We have a good team, good cars, good motors and good shock package.”
The weekend began on Friday at NEA Speedway in Harrisburg, Ark., where Hagar advanced from fourth to second place during a heat race.
“They’ve never had sprint cars there so they did a different format,” he said. “They lined us up for the feature where we finished in the heat. The race track was real dusty and kinda choppy. It was so dusty in the heat race I couldn’t hardly see the car in front of me. Then they went out for intermission and wound up drowning the race track so we had an hour and 45 minute delay.”
Hagar started the 20-lap main event on the inside of the second row and he maintained a spot on the podium throughout the feature.
“It was stomp and steer around the bottom,” he said. “I got up to second and kinda rode there. It wasn’t worth trying to tear the car up.”
Hagar took the momentum from the runner-up result into Saturday’s USCS event at Tennessee National Raceway.
After finishing fourth in the dash, Hagar won a heat race to become the high-points driver.
“They had a car scratch for a driveline problem so it moved us to the front row outside for the heat,” he said. “We won so that put me high points and I did the draw for the inversion and I drew a six.”
That lined him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“The race track was pretty fast and the moisture stayed on the bottom all night,” he said. “We made adjustments for that and it worked out. We got to third pretty quick and rode there for several laps. Then got to second and I caught Morgan Turpen in traffic. We got up to the lead probably halfway through. As soon as I took the checkered they threw the red flag. I stopped on the front straightaway for Victory Lane and they said we’re going green-white-checkered. It was kind of crazy, but it still worked out. We won twice that night.”
The victory was Hagar’s third of the season and it marked his sixth consecutive top-five finish.
Hagar will return to action this Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. He will also pilot a nonwing sprint car for Jack Hockett before racing one of Hockett’s winged sprint cars on Sunday at Double X Speedway in California, Mo.
