(September 3, 2015) – London, Ontario – The 20th season of Southern Ontario Sprints series racing continues this weekend when the tour heads back to Brighton Speedway for the 13th annual Labour Day Classic.
The 2015 SOS championship chase is winding down, as just three points-paying events remain on the schedule. Mitch Brown is going after his first SOS title, and leads the championship standings by 44 points heading into the often-pivotal doubleheader weekend. 5-time and defending SOS champion Glenn Styres is 2nd in the standings, followed by 2013 champ Chris Jones, 2-time champ Keith Dempster, Jamie Turner, Cory Turner, 2015 Rookie of the Year candidate Ryan Turner, 2014 Rookie of the Year Shawn Sliter, Frank Baranowski, and Mike Ferrell.
The events on Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6 will be the 10th and 11th rounds of the 2015 calendar, and the final visits to Brighton Speedway for the SOS tour in 2015. Lucas Oil, Rock 107, and Mystical Distributing present the Ultramar CST Labour Day Classic weekend at the 1/3 mile oval, located on the shores of Lake Ontario in Northumberland County.
Saturday night’s event will include a full racing program, plus the Four Wide Design Ltd. “Dream Come True” Dash. The dash race is open to drivers who have never claimed a checkered flag in Sprint Car competition, and will make someone’s dream of winning their first Sprint Car race will come true. Some of the drivers eligible for this year’s event include Mike Ferrell, Darren Zumpe, James Thompson, Lee Winger, and Ryan Susice. Previous winners of the event include Jim Munsie, Frank Baranowski, and Shawn Sliter.
Everyone is welcome to enjoy free entertainment, live music and fun activities for the whole family during Brighton’s Labour Day Classic Tailgate Party on Sunday, September 6. Drivers will participate in a variety of activities, including the dunk tank, Pit Stop Challenge, and more.
Sunday night’s event also includes a full racing program, plus it is “Topless Night” on the oval! Brighton’s Late Model division will compete without roofs on their cars all night, and the weekend will finish with the Simon Pettit Memorial Non-Wing Sprint Car Dash for Cash presented by RBM Carriers and Black’s Transport. All regular SOS rules will apply to this event, except no wings will be allowed. Starting positions will be determined by draw.
The SOS tour has raced at Brighton 94 times since 1997, with Rick Wilson’s 21 wins there topping the all-time list. Rick Wilson also tops the list of Labour Day Classic A-Feature winners, with 7 of those on his resume. Wilson scored his most recent Labour Day Classic weekend win in last year’s event, while Keith Dempster got his first Labour Day Classic win the following night.
Mitch Brown claimed the win in the SOS series opener at Brighton on May 16, while Glenn Styres got Brighton wins on June 20 and July 11, and Cory Turner claimed his first career Sprint Car win on August 8. Glenn Styres is the most recent SOS winner, following his 50th career Sprint Car A-Feature win on August 9 at Humberstone Speedway.
