– YAKIMA, Wash. (Sept. 28, 2015) – Trey Starks garnered his first career sprint car championship by scoring his sixth victory of the season last Saturday at Central Washington State Fair Raceway.
The win, which was his first at the track, helped secure the inaugural Western Sprint Tour title.
“It was nice to get the championship and claim the first and the last race of the season with the series,” he said. “That’s a good feeling against the cars that were there. Plus, I’ve always wanted to win in Yakima because we only go there a couple of times each year.”
Starks opened the doubleheader weekend on a sour note Friday, when he qualified third quickest before a parts failure doomed him in the heat race.
“We seemed to be fast, but didn’t have any luck,” he said. “In the heat race I was running second with a couple of laps to go and we had a part in the front end fail. The tie rod stud just broke. That took away all our points for the heat and we ended up starting 10th in the main.”
Things didn’t go any smoother in the feature.
“We got into a car on the start and dropped back a few positions,” he said. “We broke a left rear shock and it bent the drag link a bit. The car felt weird. About midway through the race the front axle snapped in half at the right front corner of the car. Luckily we didn’t get upside down. We just didn’t have a ton of luck, but it turned around on Saturday.”
Starks, who was credited with a 17th-place result on Friday, returned to the track on Saturday for the season finale. He qualified seventh quickest and advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race to lock himself into the dash.
“We drew the outside front row and got a good start in the dash,” he said. “I ended up winning that one. The track was really slick and started to get abrasive. You had to be easy on your car. I could tell the track would be hard on tires for the feature.”
Starks capitalized on the pole position for the main event as he maintained the lead on the tough track.
“I knew I had to get a good start because it had the potential to be one lane,” he said. “We found a line that worked and felt the easiest on the car. On an abrasive track like that you have to be really careful on your tires. We had a handful of cautions, about seven or eight. I definitely had to be good on my restarts because I knew there were good drivers right behind us. The car was handling good enough to keep it where I wanted it. We ended up staying in front and keeping our tires under us.”
Starks will return to competition this Thursday through Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the 53rd annual National Open with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
