Greenwood, NE — (May 6, 2016) — Terry McCarl kicked off the National Sprint League’s sophomore season on Friday night by dominating the season-opening Dirt Classic I-80 at I-80 Speedway.
Not only did McCarl pocket the $10,000 prize for the win, he also locked himself into the $20,000-to-win Dirt Classic at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., on Sept. 24.
McCarl, who started the feature seventh, had advanced into third place when the first caution came out on Lap 3. He then powered around the top groove in turns one and two on the restart to take over the runner-up position before narrowly maneuvering around polesitter Brian Brown, who led the first two laps, in turns three and four to take the lead.
McCarl maintained the top spot throughout the remainder of the event to garner his fourth career National Sprint League triumph, which ranks second best in series history.
Brown, who dropped as far back as fifth at the midpoint of the feature, rebounded for a second-place finish with Craig Dollansky earning a third-place result. Defending series champion Danny Lasoski, who opened the night by setting quick time during qualifying, finished fourth with Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions points leader Dale Blaney rounding out the top five.
Austin McCarl, Tim Kaeding, Lynton Jeffrey, Brooke Tatnell and 19th starting Josh Baughman placed sixth through 10th, respectively. Baughman scored the KSE Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
The feature was stopped three times during the 25-lap main event. The first caution came on Lap 3 when Baughman spun in turn four. Dakota Hendrickson brought out a caution on Lap 15 when his right rear tire blew and the final stoppage was a lap later when there was a malfunction with the track lights.
Austin McCarl, Brown and Ian Madsen won the first set of heat races with Kaeding, Brown and Hendrickson claiming the second set of heats.
The next National Sprint League event is May 20 at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., for the $10,000-to-win Folkens Brothers Trucking Spring Nationals.
