Taking to the Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, OR for the 3rd Annual Marvin Smith Memorial, Jason Solwold would finish second during the opening night race before defending his 2015 win on Saturday night to become the race’s first repeat winner.

“It was a great weekend for our team in Oregon over the weekend,” Solwold said. “Cottage Grove gave us a great surface as they always do, and my guys gave me a race winning car.”

Friday night’s opening leg of the Marvin Smith Memorial would see Solwold time the Scottie’s Plumbing/Pops Entertainment/Vic’s66 No. 18 machine in quickest in his qualifying flight.

Getting through his heat race and starting on the front row of the featuring event, the Burlington, WA driver would jump out to the early lead, though he would have company in the name of Roger Crockett very soon.

Falling back into the second spot on the second lap of the feature event, Solwold would continue to play hunter as he chased after the race leader. Late in the race, Solwold would have to fight for his second spot as he would feel pressure from Justyn Cox.

Fighting for the spot would allow the leader to pull away even farther. Clearing Cox, Solwold would keep the second spot and his night on the podium.

Returning to action on Sunday night, Solwold with line the Doyle Guffie’s Rayle Auto Sales/KarMart Motorsports/Speedmart backed entry up on the front row for the 41-lap A main event.

Falling into the second spot when the green flag flew, Solwold would chase after Henry Van Dam on this night. On the ninth lap, Solwold would sail around Van Dam and take command of the race. A caution on lap 17 would bunch the field back up, but Solwold was too good on this night as he quickly opened his lead back up to a healthy distance as drivers did what they could to keep pace with him.

The caution would again fly on lap 35, and with a lapped car in between himself and second place, Solwold would again have another good restart as he opened his lead up. On the small confines of the Cottage Grove Speedway, Solwold would manage to get into lapped traffic during the six-lap run to the finish, and would get held up on the white flag lap.

With second place pulling up to his rear bumper, Solwold stayed composed and fended off the challenge as he claimed his second consecutive Marvin Smith Memorial.

“It got interesting on the last lap on Sunday night, but I was able to hit my marks and get the win for this team,” Solwold added. “This is a big win, and hopefully it helps us start off another successful summer.”

Solwold and the Shaylen Raye Motorsports team would like to thank Scottie’s Plumbing, Pops Entertainment, Vic’s 66, Doyle Guffie’s Rayle Auto Sales, Speedmart, After Hours Painting, Triple X Race Co., Al Parker Race Engines, Wings Unlimited, Slade Shocks, Rob Graham Trucking, Wings Unlimited, Meyer Sings, Vahlco Wheels, KarMart Motorsports, and Pro Signs for their continued support.
