TULSA (January 14, 2017) – Christopher Bell said he would like nothing more than to see his name on the back of a Chili Bowl Nationals t-shirt for winning the biggest event in his home state. Bell accomplished that task winning Saturday’s finale at the River Spirit Expo Center in dominating fashion. Bell held off fellow Oklahoma driver Daryn Pittman through multiple late race restarts for the victory.
“This has been my whole life coming. I’ve been coming here for so long. I remember sitting up on those grandstands just watching. This just means the world to me, said an emotional Bell in victory lane. “I’ve had so many opportunities to get this done, but I’ve never been able to do it. For me to be able to win here is a dream come true.
Bell driving the JBL sponsored Toyota powered car for Keith Kunz Motorsports said taking a different approach to how he ran the feature on Saturday night made the difference.
“That was huge because I didn’t have to deal with any lapped traffic all race long. Every time I’ve come to this race I’ve just attacked, attacked, attacked and it never worked out. I always got in trouble and took myself out. This time I just tried to take it easy and just run hard enough to stay out of trouble. I was really paying attention to the big screen. I was able to watch that and gauge how far those guys were back on me.”
Bell had to hold off fellow Oklahoma driver Daryn Pittman for the victory. After Pittman’s preliminary night performance Bell figured that’s who he would be racing for the win with on Saturday.
“I knew Pittman was coming on me. I knew he would be the guy to beat after last night, he was really fast, said Bell.
Justin Grant led the field into turn one in his Clauson/Marshall Racing entry with Bell and teammate Tyler Courtney in tow. The first caution of the feature appeared on lap five for Gary Taylor flipping between turns three and four. Taylor walked away from the crash under his own power.
Grant pulled away during the restart along with Bell to break away from the field. Behind them Ronnie Gardner and Travis Berryhill diced for the fourth position on lap nine.
Bell stayed right on Grant’s back bumper as they approached the back of the field on lap 15 just as the section caution appeared for a four-car incident right in front of the leaders that involved Rico Abreu, Justin Peck, Thomas Meseraull, and Chase Briscoe, with Briscoe getting upside down.
After the restart, Jake Swanson moved around Courtney to take away the third spot. The caution appeared again on lap 18 for Tyler Thomas spinning in turn two.
Swanson got a look under Bell during the restart for second, but could not make the pass. Further back in the pack Daryn Pittman jumped up to the top of the race track and started to put pressure on Courtney for the fourth spot. This race evolved into a five-car race for the lead.
On lap 26 Bell drove around the outside of Grant, bringing Pittman along with him to second as Grant dropped back to third. Bell started to drive away from the fell Oklahoma driver Pittman on lap 30. As the lead duo opened a gap between a five-car pack for third on back.
With 10 laps to go Bell started to enter slower traffic as Pittman closed the gap. Just as the traffic was within reach when Tyler Courtney caught the fence and collected Rico Abreu between turns one and two. At that point Abreu had advanced 18 positions from the back of the field before having to return to the back of the field.
Bell opened a sizeable advantage from Pittman after the restart. With 10 laps to go Tanner Thorson worked his way up into the top five and pressured Gardner for the fourth spot.
Another caution appeared with seven laps to go when Michael Faccinto had contact with another car and stopped in turn two.
Bell got away from Pittman on the restart, but Pittman closed the gap a lap later before another caution appeared for Jonathan Beason stopping in turn three.
Bell motored away to a sizeable advantage when the green flag appeared. From there Bell hit his marked and cruised to his first Chili Bowl victory. Pittman held on for second even though his motor blew up coming to the checkered flag. Grant rounded out the podium.
Even through the restarts Bell paced himself to maintain his advantage without making a mistake.
“From watching the previous qualifying nights and watching how the restarts went. Everyone is trying to do the Kevin Swindell deal where they run the top and get a big run, but it just didn’t seem like it was working out this year,” said Bell. “I just wanted to make sure I hit my marks. This is a long time coming and a dream come true.”
After leading the early portion of the feature the scramble where he lost the lead was a product of not changing lines in time.
“Our car was great around the bottom all weekend, which I’m usually awful at. I hugged the bottom for a lap too long. I didn’t quite get up there quick enough, which I don’t think I’ve ever been accused of before,” said Grant. “The car was great, I just didn’t have anything for (Bell and Pittman) once it moved to the top.”
Even though Pittman was one of the first to go to the top of the track, he couldn’t develop a strategy to pass Bell.
“I could get close (to Bell), but I sat there behind him trying to figure out if I did get close how would I get by him and never came up with a plan,” said Pittman. “I was really just hoping he would make a mistake, and he’s too good to do that.”
