WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (5/27/17) – After a battle with mother nature last weekend, racing returned to the corn fields of Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. The “Open Wheel” Memorial Classic is one of the must-see open wheel events in the State of Ohio, offering fans a look at some of the biggest stars in open wheel racing around the mid-west.
The K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders joined forces with the Great Lakes Sprint Series for Saturday’s open wheel showcase. The two-series’ brought a strong field of 21 cars signing in to compete on the 1/3rd mile. Randy Hannagan carried the American flag during the opening parade laps to honor the veterans and current service members of the United States military. Once opening parade laps ended, it was Hannagan and Jared Horstman leading the field to the opening green flag. Hannagan took the lead into the first corner and led the opening lap. Hannagan began to pull away giving himself a 1.5 second lead over the rest of the field. It only took a few laps before Hannagan began to catch lap traffic. The lap traffic slowed Hannagan diminishing the gap he had built between himself and the field. The first caution of the race came for the 2 of Kyle Sauder and the 23 of Devin Dobie. Both drivers were inside the top ten at the time of the caution. Sauder was able to pull away from the crash and continue in the A-main. Back under green, Hannagan pulled away from the field again only to catch lap traffic with 9 laps to go in the main. Butch Schroeder and Jared Horstman began to battle for the second spot. Schroeder’s night would end during a caution for Ed Neumeister. During the caution, Schroeder cut a tire requiring the car to head pit side. In the end, Randy Hannagan came away with the victory. Butch Schroeder’s misfortune led Jared Horstman to a second place finish with “Mad” Max Stambaugh finishing in third. Dustin Daggett, Devon Dobie, and Kyle Sauder took home the heat race wins. Jeff Williams set quick time with a 12.912 second lap.
In Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprint car action, Matt Goodnight and Todd Kane led the field of 20 to the opening green flag. Kane won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Dustin Ingle made his way into the second pushing Kyle Simon in the 23S back to third. The first yellow flag of the event came with five laps in the books. Parker Frederickson ended up on top of an infield tire with Todd Keen coming through splashing water onto the race track. Back under green, a battle between Kane and Ingle began to form. Ingle came out on the winning side of the battle claiming the top spot. Luke Hall, who started on the inside of row five began to make a run. The run was a success moving his 9N into the runner-up spot. Second spot was not good enough for Hall as he began to set his sights on the leader. With ten laps remaining, Hall took the lead and the A-main victory. Dustin Ingle came home in second. Drew Rader came home in third. Kyle Simon, Dustin Ingle, and Todd Kane claimed the heat race wins.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprint A-main was led to green by the 44W of Chris Whipple and the 14D of Nick Daugherty. The race into turn one put Daugherty in the lead and the leader of lap number one. Ryan Barr made a run early in the main to put himself into the sixth spot. The 22 of Gunnar Lucius came to a stop just past the flag stand bringing out the caution. On the restart, Kobe Allison jumped into the second spot ready to challenge Daugherty for the lead. The run for the lead was cut short by a caution for Andrew Heitkamp who stalled on the track. Heitkamp was running 5th. Rod Henning got a great jump coming to the restart allowing him to jump into the third spot. A late race caution would remove Allison from the picture due to a broken axle. Coming to the white flag, Henning put everything he had as a last-ditch effort for the win. The move was surprisingly successful giving Henning the .070 second win over Nick Daugherty. Korbyn Hayslett finished in third. Gunnar Lucius, Kobe Allison, and Brad Strunk picked up the heat race wins.
With 39 cars registering for the race, the Satellite Connections UMP Modified A-main was a competitive lineup. Jim Szekacs and Jim Post led the field of 20 to the opening green flag. Post took the lead and led the opening lap. The A-main was plagued with cautions stemming from handling along the cushion in the turns. The first flew for the 2B of Darryl Banks going around in turn three. Back under green, Billy Haaggr made his way into the third spot and ready to challenge for the second spot. Szekacs began to shuffle back in the field before the yellow flew for the 20K of Bill Keeler. Keeler’s spin put some extra moisture on the track. On the restart, Jeff Koz got a great start and muscled his way into the top spot. Haagar seemed to follow Koz as he found himself moving into the second spot. With Haagar trailing, a caution is just what he needed to catch back up. Haagar’s dream came true as the 9C of Troy Cattarene brought out the caution. A series of yellows followed including a four-car collision exiting turn three late in the race. Tony Anderson made his way into the third spot and eventually into the second spot as Jim Post’s car began to drop off the pace. In the end, Jeff Koz picked up the victory. Chris Ullery snuck through the field to finish second with Tony Anderson coming home third. Darryl Banks, Scottie Williams, Tony Anderson, and Weasel Phlipot came away with the heat race wins. David Treon and Brian Post took home the B-main wins.
