Qld’s Summer Of Speed continues this Wednesday night January 6 at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway with the inaugural running of the Capalaba Wreckers Sprintcar Cup kicking off “Money Week” at the Archerfield raceway.
The thirty-five lap, $10,000 to win event on Wednesday night and the fifty lap, $20,000 to win Titan Garages Australian Sprintcar Open to be run in conjunction with Round 9 of the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars Championship on Friday and Saturday night represent a handsome pay cheque for any driver that can sweep the two shows. And given his status as the world’s number one Sprintcar driver with four World Of Outlaws Championships and four Knoxville Nationals trophies in his cabinet, American Donny Schatz may just be the man to pull off the double!
Schatz is on a roll with victories in the last two Australian Opens, including his stunning win in last year’s non-stop fifty lap event where he lapped the entire field in front of a huge crowd at the venue. Having the words “Winner: Donny Schatz” engraved on the Cup trophy on Wednesday night will add plenty of fuel to his desire to get the hat-trick of wins and sweep the “Money Week” events.
The addition of the Capalaba Wreckers Sprintcar Cup to this year’s Summer Of Speed schedule has proven to be a bonanza for race fans with the cream of American and Australian Sprintcar drivers heading to Brisbane for this week’s races.
Joining Schatz from the United States will be legendary Californian racer Brent Kaeding, 2009 USAC Silver Crown Champion Bud Kaeding, Jesse “The Rocket” Hocket from Warsaw Missouri, East Coast Pipelines Speedweek winner Jason Johnson, World Of Outlaws driver Jason Sides and six-time Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic winner Danny Smith.
Hockett and Bud Kaeding have already tasted success at BIS in the past week, the two Americans winning the International Sprintcar Series events on December 30 and January 1 respectively to record their maiden Sprintcar victories at Archerfield. Two more victories by any one of the seven American visitors to BIS this week would complete the USA domination of the Australians during this summer at the Speedway.
Looking to break that sequence on Wednesday night are three of the top Australian Sprintcar drivers in the country at the moment. Brooke Tatnell, Robbie Farr and Max Dumesny have won seven Australian Sprintcar Championships between them and they currently fill the top three spots on the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars Championship ladder. All three are more than capable of breaking the American’s win streak and securing a win for the Aussies on Wednesday night.
A long-standing association with Chris and Barry Lawrence and the team at Capalaba Wreckers will bring six-time and reigning Australian Sprintcar Champion Garry Brazier to Brisbane for Wednesday night’s Sprintcar Cup. A third generation driver from NSW, “The Braz” has a proud family history in Australian Speedway racing and he will be out to remind everyone that he is the man to beat when it comes to the big dollar shows.
It’s a sensational field of nominations, and the list continues with three time Classic winner and former National Champion Kerry “The Madman” Madsen, his Kendrick/92.9 Racing team mate Jason Kendrick, “The Rock Star” Danny Reidy and WA racer “Flyin'” Ryan Farrell also Brisbane bound.
Qld too will be very well represented by Bryan Mann, who is enjoying a career year with two A-Main wins this season and who currently sits fifth in World Series standings, Qld Champion James McFadden, Todd Wanless, Pete Thorley, Peter Lack, Cameron Gessner, Richard Morgan and Andrew Scheuerle heading the list of local drivers.
In all, thirty-three drivers from five mainland States and the USA will do battle over three nights of racing for the 30K on offer to that one driver who can win both the Capalaba Wreckers Sprintcar Cup and the Titan Garages Australian Sprintcar Open. It’s “Money Week” at BIS, and it’s three nights of racing you will not want to miss.
