Queenslanders will take on the world’s best Sprintcars drivers this weekend (Fri Jan 8/Sat Jan 9) at the Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway (BIS) during round 9 of the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars Championship which also doubles as the fifty lap, $20,000 to win Titan Garages Australian Sprintcar Open.
Contracted drivers James McFadden, Bryan Mann, Danny Reidy and Peter Lack lead the hometown contenders.
Mann returns to Queensland buoyed by his Speedweek results, content in the knowledge the team qualified for the A-Main at each of the five events over the past week to finish seventh overall. He only failed to finish one feature race, a flat right rear tyre cutting short his run at Mount Gambier in South Australia. Despite this Mann remains firmly in the top five of the driver standings after eight of fourteen rounds.
Current Queensland Champion McFadden is seventh on the points table following a solid Speedweek drive, setting quick time at Avalon and finishing the final three rounds inside the top five.
Former PWWSS round winner Lack is fourteenth in the championship after a more difficult Speedweek campaign, failing to progress further than the B-Main at each event.
Gold Coast domiciled Northern Territorian Reidy is twelfth after a major crash during the Speedweek final at Warrnambool. Reidy just passed heat one race leader Daniel Newhman when he attempted to perform a slide job on Jamie Stark to place him a lap down. Slight contact sent Reidy and Stark hard into the turn 4 wall and over in front of the field with Reidy out for the evening.
1996 Australian Sprintcar Champion Todd Wanless, Pete Thorley, Allan Woods, Cameron Gessner, Richard Morgan and Andrew Scheuerle head the list of other local drivers.
Uncle Sam has provided an impressive list of challengers including four times WoO (World of Outlaws) champion Donny Schatz and recent winner of the 50k Scott Darley Classic at the Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway. Schatz lapped the entire field to win this event last year.
Three-time and reigning USAC Silver Crown Champion Bud Kaeding won the International Sprintcar Series Feature at BIS on January 1 and the $10,000 to win Capalaba Wreckers Sprintcar Cup last night. He also finished third in the Speedcar feature on the same program. With two major wins at the Archerfield venue, Keading will be one of the favorites as will his father Brent.
Contracted US stars Jason Johnson and Danny Smith finished first and second respectively during the East Coast Pipelines Speedweek with defending PWWSS champion Brooke Tatnell third. Tatnell is a proud three-time Australian champion that these days calls Sans Souci, NSW and Forrest Lakes, Minnesota home, dividing is time between racing commitments in both countries.
WoO driver Jason Sides and Jesse “The Rocket” Hockett from Warsaw Missouri round out the international competitors.
Tatnell, along with Robbie Farr and Max Dumesny currently fill the top three spots on the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars Championship ladder and all three are more than capable of breaking the American’s winning streak this weekend. So is current Australian Champion Garry Brazier who finished third at the Parramatta Round in December.
The racing continues in Queensland on Sunday night with round 10 of the championship at the Charlton Raceway, Toowoomba.
