From Jim Fisher
With the laps running out in Saturday’s winged sprint feature at Butler Speedway, it looked as the best Dan Hall could hope for was a third-place finish. But that all changed when leaders Ken Mackey and Doug Zimmerman tangled, putting Hall at the front of the field for the final two laps. He went on to record his first Butler Speedway sprint car victory.
Other feature winners were Zeke McKenzie (UMP Modifieds), Marty French (sportsman), and Keith Hiller (street stocks).
Ryan Ruhl and Ryan Kirkendall made up the front row for the 25-lap winged sprint feature. On the initial start, Steve Mackey did a roll over on the backstretch, with Jared Horstman also involved. Neither was able to restart the race.
Ruhl led the early portions of the event, with fourth-starting Zimmerman later maneuvering his way into the lead using the outside groove on the speedway. Hall spent much of the race near the front, and was in the runner-up position on a lap 20 caution.
Ken Mackey lined up 11th on the grid and had moved to third with five laps remaining. He went by Hall on the lap 20 restart and set sail for the rim-riding Zimmerman. The duo went under the white flag, but a caution flag flew, setting up a quick dash to the finish. Mackey ducked underneath on the frontstretch on the restart, but the leaders made contact in turn one, sending Zimmerman off the top of the turn. Mackey’s mount was damaged in the contact, ending his race, while Zimmerman would rejoin the field at the tail.
Third at the time, Hall inherited the lead and flew around the speedway on the restart to capture the win. Aaron Smith was second at the finish, with Shelby Bilton third, and Zimmerman fourth. The rest of the top 10 were Mark Aldrich, Ryan Kirkendall, Rocky LoPresto, Trey Smith, Danny Foulk, and Mike Baker.
Sprint car heat races were won by Zimmerman, LoPresto, and Jared Horstman.
