ABBOTTSTOWN, PA – (4/30/2011) – You could see the big sigh of relief on the face of Dallastown’s Cory Haas after winning the 25-lap “410” sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
“We got off to a great start this year, but then all of sudden we were racing for tenth,” said Haas after exiting his Michael Barshinger-owned Embee & Son/York PB Truss/Tailgaters #11c in victory lane, “I want to thank Mike and the crew for all their hard work. The car was perfect tonight.”
Haas started fourth after outside front row starter Pat Cooper spun in turn four on the original start. Adam Wilt moved up to the outside of the front row for the restart, and Haas followed polesitter and leader Bill Stine and Wilt for the first six laps before Wilt slid under Stine for the race lead on lap number seven.
Haas finally caught Stine for the runner-up spot on lap 14. At the time, Wilt’s lead was 1.17 seconds. But Haas closed as the leaders raced through lapped traffic, and Haas made the race winning pass on lap 19.
“Adam drove a great race, but the driver in second always has the advantage in lapped traffic,” said Haas.
Haas held off the final challenges of Wilt after a 22nd-lap caution for Dave Wilson, who came to a stop in turn four. His final margin of victory was .56 seconds. It was his first win of the year and the third 410 sprint win of his Lincoln career.
Wilt settled for second, with Danny Dietrich coming from eighth starting spot (on the second attempt to start the race) to finish third. Stine and Alan Krimes completed the top five.
Sixth through tenth were Brent Marks, Brian Montieth, Brian Leppo, Doug Dodson, and Justin Collett.
Heats for the 24 “410” Sprints were won by Wilt, Cooper, and Haas.
Hallam’s Adrian Shaffer was the winner of a wild “358” sprint car make-up feature from last Saturday night after surviving contact with challenger Isaac Sneeringer in the final turns.
Rookie Sneeringer grabbed the lead from the pole and led the first 18 laps before Shaffer wrestled the to spot in heavy lapped traffic on the next-to-last lap. Sneeringer made one final bid to reclaim the lead in the final turns, but tapped the inside of Shaffer and spun, collecting Brook Weibley Steve Owings, and a few others in the process.
Fifth-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh drove back around 11th-starting Logan Schuchart on the final turn to claim second, with Schuchart third. Billy Dietrich, who started 12th, finished fourth, with 10th-starting Dale Hammaker fifth. Sixth through tenth were hard charger Niki Young (started 19th), Tim Wagaman, Billy Pauch, Jr., Chad Trout, and Tim Berkheimer.
In only his second week out after a dozen years away, Hanover’s Joey Allen dominated the regularly-scheduled “358” sprint car feature. Allen, whose Jeff Spalding race team hauled the car to the track on an open trailer pulled by a Suburban, started on the pole and led every lap.
Matt Boland started fourth and finished second, with Kyle Moody, Jeff Rohrbaugh, and Billy Dietrich crossing third through fifth. Sixth through tenth were Brook Weibley, Jay Galloway, Logan Schuchart, Adrian Shaffer, and Kevin Nagy.
Heats for the 36 “358” Sprints were won by Dietrich, Dale Hammaker, Allen, and Scott Fisher, with Pauch winning the consolation.
Abbottsown’s Duane Watson came from his 11th starting spot and battled with outside frontrow starter Roy Warehime, Jr. lap-after-lap before taking the lead for good on lap 14 and drove to his second win of 2011 in the 20-lap Thundercar feature.
Warehime grabbed the lead at the outset after four failed starts before Watson began hounding him for the lead at the halfway point. Watson was scored the leader on the 11th lap but Warehime didn’t give up and retook the lead the next lap.
Watson made his race-winning move on the 14th lap and then survived a three-lap shootout for the win by .63 seconds over Warehime and ninth-starting Brian Walls. Sam Gallagher (who started 12th) and Mike Slaybaugh completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Danny Beard, 19th-starting Justin Mong, Gary Warehime, Todd Miller, and Justin Bittle.
Heats for the 22 Thundercars were won by Sam Gallagher, Danny Beard, and Mike Slaybaugh.
Next Saturday, May 7th, at 7 PM, it will be York County Racing Club (YCRC) Night at Lincoln Speedway with a regular 3-division point show featuring the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints, the Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints, and Thundercars. Gates will open at 5 PM.
