Brady Bacon – Fifth at Eagle!

By Bill W

June 13, 2011 – Brady Bacon’s fortune has been turning for the better as of late, and he scored a strong fifth place finish last Saturday night at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Nebraska. The Lucas Oil ASCS National Series sanctioned the Eagle Nationals. The driver of the Brady Bacon Racing #99 will head across the Red River to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas this weekend for two nights of ASCS-Sooner/Lone Star action Friday and Saturday.

The draw saw the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver start outside row four for his Eagle heat race. He would charge to fourth. “I was able to go to the middle of one and two and get about three cars on the start,” says Brady. “The other guys were out there a straightaway or so in front of me. I caught up to them, but I couldn’t do anything with them. The track was still pretty fast at that point.”

The difference between a chance at a front row start and starting ninth in the feature was that Brady was in the fourth heat. Tied for eighth, he had to settle for a ninth starting spot having been in the latter heat. “They reworked the track before the feature, so the first ten laps or so, you could run the bottom,” he says of the 1/3-mile oval. “I tried the middle the first couple of laps, but it seemed the guy on the bottom would miss and slide in front of me. That happened about three times when I got good runs through the middle.”

It was a driver’s track on Saturday. “Turns one and two were slick all the way to the wall, and three and four were a little rough,” says Brady. “You had to go above that stuff. It was fast on that end.”

Before he moved forward, the 2010 ASCS Ronald Laney Hard-Charger fell back before he got going. “We fell back to seventh and then ninth,” he says. “I started going in on the middle and coming out on the bottom. I was able to get (Jeff) Swindell that way. (Johnny) Herrera got in the rough stuff and collected someone else, so I was able to get by them.”

He continued his run toward the leaders, but encountered some obstacles. “I ran the top the rest of the race,” says Brady. “We caught lapped traffic towards the end, and I tried the bottom. It was gone and I lost a lot of momentum. We maybe could have finished top three if we had run the top. The guys in front of me kind of got bottled up in the middle, and if I would have known that, I definitely had enough on top to get by. (Leader Jordan) Boston spun out in front of me, and got going again too.”

Overall, the fifth place run built some confidence heading into this weekend. “We finally got going like we should be,” says Brady. “We were pretty fast and didn’t have any problems. It’s great compared to what we have been doing.”

There will be changes heading into this weekend’s action at a big half-mile that Brady has been good at. “We’re changing some things with our motor for this weekend,” he says. “It didn’t run quite as well at Eagle as we wanted, so we’ll see if it runs at Devil’s Bowl. We’ve been fast there every time.”
