August 2, 2011 – Brady Bacon is riding a wave of momentum into Southern Iowa Sprintweek after a pair of third place finishes with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series at the Placerville Speedway in California. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native has a busy two week period in store, as he plans on running Knoxville’s 360 Nationals, Non-wing Nationals, the Front Row and Ultimate Challenges in Oskaloosa, and the 410 Nationals back at Knoxville.
Things started well in Placerville with a front row draw that resulted in a heat win on Friday night. “We were really good in the heat,” says Brady. “We were able to pass Tony (Bruce) and get the win. That put us in the redraw.”
A quick start for the Brady Bacon Racing #99 saw it taking the bottom groove. “We drew the three,” he says of his main event starting spot. “I was able to get into second. (Aaron) Reutzel was able to get by us on the top. We moved (to the top) after that.”
Brady’s pursuit of Reutzel continued. “He bobbled a couple of times, but the yellow came out, so we weren’t able to get back by him,” he says. “We had a good run. They didn’t make enough mistakes for us to get by, and (winner) Wayne (Johnson) didn’t make any mistakes at all.”
It was a good night to gain on the point leaders in ASCS. “We had to take third, but everyone that was in front of us in points that night, finished behind us,” says Brady. “That was a good points night.”
Watching the heats, Brady was glad his third place finish on Friday locked him into Saturday’s main event. “It was definitely a good night to be locked in, because the heat races were pretty nasty,” he says. “It was hard to pass, and there were slide jobs that didn’t make it. There were some torn up cars, so we were lucky that we were in.”
Brady drew outside of row two for Saturday’s feature starting spot, and used a good start to pursue the leaders. “We were able to get the jump on Reutzel on the start and get into third,” he says. “We stayed with Shane (Stewart) and Wayne pretty much the whole time. I wish we would have had more lapped traffic, because we could move around maybe a little more than Shane was.”
The result was another solid third place finish. “They didn’t make mistakes,” says Brady of the leaders. “When you are racing with guys like that, they just don’t make many of them. We were good, and we took what we could get. We were happy with that.”
Brady plans on qualifying on Thursday for this weekend’s 360 Nationals. “I’m feeling really good going into Knoxville,” he says. “We’ve changed a bunch of stuff since the last time we were here. I think we’re going to be pretty good.”
After running the 360 Nationals, Sunday, Brady will be shooting for the title in the Knoxville USAC Non-wing Nationals. If everything goes well, he’ll also hit the Front Row Challenge on Monday and the Ultimate Challenge on Tuesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.
