Abbottstown, PA – (September 3, 2011) — It went down to the final lap of the final points race of the year.
And as Jim Siegel was holding off title contender Danny Dietrich to become the 13th different driver to win a race at Lincoln this year, Brian Montieth passed two cars on the final lap to secure his fourth straight track championship.
Dietrich’s second-place finish closed the Gary Kauffman-owned Sandoe’s Fruit Market/APM Buildings #48 to within 20 points at the end, but Montieth, who needed to finish in the top seven to secure the title no matter what Dietrich did, passed both Kyle Pruitt and Cory Haas on a last-lap shootout to cross sixth.
The last-lap restart was set up when Jim Siegel pulled a slider on race-long leader Chad Criswell coming through the final turns. Though there was no contact, Criswell lost the handle and spun out, bring out the caution.
“It was pretty exciting from where I was sitting!” exclaimed the third-generation New Oxford driver upon exiting his N-Line Marketing/Orndorff Construction #59 in victory lane, “My hats off to Chad Criswell. He did a heck of-a-job. I don’t think I dirtied him up there. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and that was a last-ditch effort. I think I cleared him there…and I don’t know if he got sideways or spun out or whatever, and I didn’t know what to do on that last restart.’
The caution put 11th-starting Dietrich on Siegel’s bumper for the final restart, but Siegel held on for his seventh career Lincoln win.
“The 48 obviously was looking to put it in victory lane for his championship hopes,” continued Siegel, “They had a good year, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been here and this feels good!”
Crossing third behind Dietrich as seventh-starting Gerard McIntyre, Jr., with 12th-starting Brian Leppo and Brad McClelland rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Montieth, Pruitt, Haas, Nick Schlauch, Jr., and Austin Reed.
Adam Wilt was uninjured in a front stretch flip to bring out the only red of the event on lap 10.
Heats for the 22 “410” sprinters were won by Haas, Leppo, and Pruitt.
Dover’s Gene Knaub continued his dominance in the 358 late models, coming from 11th starting spot to win the feature event. Knaub climbed through the field to take the lead from Pancho Lawler on lap eight and drove away to his third win in four 2011 Lincoln races.
Graves led the first lap from the pole before giving way to fourth-starting Lawler. Lawler held the lead until the Superior Homes #1 took the top spot for good.
Lawler settled for second, with Chase Billet, 15th-starting Grant Adams, and Mike Walls (who came from the back after second lap spin in turn three) completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Cam Zeigler, Bobby Beard, Todd Leonard, John Baker, and Fred Harden.
Heats for the 23 “358” Late Models were won by Walls, Knaub, and Graves.
Fawn Grove’s Paul Miller came from seventh starting spot to grab the lead from Cody Fairchok and drive away to a 1.17-second win in the 25-lap feature for super sportsman.
Front row starters Jim Shuster and Leroy Martin got together just in front of the flagstand as the two leaders were about to complete lap one, bringing out the first of three red flags on the event.
Fairchok assumed the pole for the restart, and held off Miller for the first nine laps before Miller took the lead on a 10th-lap restart. Miller led the rest of the way, with Fairchok holding on for second, eighth-starting Jay Fannasy third,11th-starting Frankie Herr fourth, and 10th-starting Scott Dellinger fifth.
Sixth through tenth were Chad Criswell, Lanny Hake, Duaine Smith, Steve Wilbur, and John Garman.
Heats for the 33 Super Sportsman were won by Shuster, Martin, and Hake, with Daryl Shaffer winning the consolation.
Next Saturday night, Sept. 10th at 7 PM, the 358 Sprints will close out there season-long battle for the track championship in there final Keizer Aluminum Wheels point race of the season. The Thundercars and the Classic Racing Series will round out the evening’s racing action. Gates will open at 5 PM.
