October 18, 2011 – The 1st Annual Lonestar Sprint Nationals is in the book, and the FVP #21 team and Brian Brown posted a well earned top ten finish. Next up, the team heads to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas where the Grain Valley, Missouri driver has fared well over the years. This race will also be run under the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series banner.
The three-night Lonestar Sprint Nationals at the Lonestar Speedway near Kilgore, Texas started on Thursday night. After charging from row four to finish third in the heat, Brian would finish tenth in a main event that claimed several competitors. “It was probably one of the roughest races I’ve been in,” says Brian. “It definitely didn’t fit my style of driving. We kind of just survived it. It was probably the happiest I’ve been to finish tenth. We knew there were two more nights, and I didn’t want to do something stupid and take us out.”
Despite being third in overall points for drivers not locked into Saturday night, the team went about improving on their Thursday run by winning the heat race Friday. “We were pretty good in the heat,” says Brian. “We felt that even though we had the third most points going in, we needed to be in the top eight to contend on Saturday night. We drew a good number and we were able to win it. They said Jason (Johnson) may have been better, so we went to work.”
Brian started seventh in the feature. “The track was good on Friday,” says Brian of the high-banked 3/8-mile oval. “It’s just so fast. You get on top and go as hard as you can as long as you can. It can be tough to pass. We fell back a little bit in the feature. It seemed like we struggled on the starts all weekend long.”
Brian came back to finish where he started…seventh in Friday’s main event. “We felt like we were making progress all weekend long really,” he says. “There were a lot of good cars that had to run the B and never made the show. We felt if we got the car good enough, we could get up through there.”
The two-time Knoxville Raceway champ started outside row six for Saturday night’s $12,000 to win finale. “We needed a good start,” says Brian. “Everyone got strung out. There was only one yellow in a 40-lap feature, and it was just tough for us to move forward. I don’t really know what we could have done better car-wise or driving-wise. We ran as hard as we could for 40 laps and the car was pretty good. We were just a tick off the leaders. It’s frustrating when you finish ninth and don’t know why.”
The ninth place finish sets the team up for this weekend’s two-night run at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway Friday and Saturday. “We’re putting in a different motor for Devil’s Bowl, and hopefully, that will do the trick,” says Brian. “It’s not going to get any easier there. We had an opportunity to win there earlier in the year and got passed towards the end. We definitely want to get back at it this weekend.”
There has been success for Brian at the banked ½-mile oval. “We’ve always run good there,” he says. “Our goal is always to win, but on Friday we want to at least finish top four to lock into Saturday. We’re there to win. It’s a tough deal. I think there will be 15-20 more cars, and we have our work cut out. We’re working hard and I think we’ll be in contention.”

Brian’s Q&A
Jeff Shorter asks: Do you purchase new engines every year?
Brian answers: It just depends. We got a couple this year. It really depends on the economy and how we are doing partnership-wise. Jeff, if you want to buy me one, I’ll take it!
