Brady Bacon – Runs at Devil’s Bowl Set Up Short Track Nationals!

By Bill W

October 26, 2011 – With several heavy hitters on the sidelines either Friday or Saturday night, Brady Bacon was able to not only make both features at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway, but also move forward solidly into fourth place in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series standings. The series heads to the Short Track Nationals this weekend at the I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas.

Friday night’s prelim at the Devil’s Bowl Winternationals saw a slow start for Brady when he started second and finished third in his heat. “We were in the second heat and it was still greasy,” he says of the track conditions. “Tony Bruce got us on the start, and then Sam Hafertepe found the not so greasy part and was able to get around me. Everyone was in line the rest of the race.”

A stacked semi-main event awaited that only transferred two to the main event. “It was a tough B,” says Brady. “Jack Dover was on the pole, Gary Wright was outside of one, and (Johnny) Herrera was beside us in the second row. I knew it would be tough. Fortunately, Dover had some problems in turn one and pushed up. That slowed Herrera down and I was able to get by both of them. We were able to finish second behind Gary Wright.”

The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver felt fortunate. “We were lucky, because there weren’t a lot of provisionals to go around,” he says. “A lot of guys were left out. That helped us in the points, because (Tim) Crawley wasn’t able to use a provisional…there weren’t enough.”

Brady would run twelfth after starting 21st on a heavy surface. “The track was really tacky and hard to pass,” he says. “We weren’t loose enough, but no one was. Turns one and two were so tight. People were biking up. I got on two wheels several times. We took what we could get and salvaged a decent finish.”

A different track greeted competitors on Saturday. “I pretty much knew after what happened Friday that the track would be rubber-down on Saturday,” says Brady. “There just wasn’t enough water in it.”

Despite the dry-slick conditions, Brady drove from sixth to second in his heat to make the redraw for the finale. “We were really good in the heat,” he says. “The track started taking rubber at that point in the heat race. The finish put us in the redraw, and we drew six out of six.”

Drivers knew they had to jockey for position early. “It was a big game in who could find where the rubber was going to come up first,” says Brady. “It only took five or six laps and there was some coming off turn two and turn four. We were able to get by a guy at the beginning, and we got Wayne Johnson when he pushed up towards the middle of the race.”

The two spots gave Brady a solid fourth place finish. “It was a pretty good night finishing fourth,” he says. “At the end, everyone kind of spread out and there wasn’t much passing. All in all, Saturday was pretty good. We had three or four laps left on the tire.”

The fourth place run put Brady fourth in ASCS points heading into Little Rock. He will qualify Thursday. “We gained some on Swindell Saturday, but we only have four races left that are for points,” he says. “Little Rock is show points only. We qualify on Thursday. We’ve had some problems there this year, so we hope we can get back to doing well. The feature pays pretty well, so we definitely want to get in. There will be a lot of cars, and we’ll see how we hold up.”
