(Gardena, CA, May 24, 2011) After an expensive fire last month, Gardena, California’s Greg Alexander is anxious to return to action in the annual Salute to Indy featuring the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars this Saturday night, May 26th, at Perris Auto Speedway. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will be at 6:30.
While running second late in the B main on April 28th, the “carbeque” happened at the famous Riverside County clay oval. The blaze started around the engine, but quickly spread to the cockpit. Feeling the intense heat from the flames that were licking at him, the 23-year-old racer quickly slid the car to a stop on the inside of turn four. He jumped out of the cockpit and began rolling on the ground. Even though the fire crew was on him and the car within seconds, the damage was extensive.
Once the crew assesed the damage, it was easy to see that it was a costly fire. All of the car’s wiring, hoses and gauges were burned and they had to be replaced. Alexander’s helmet and firesuit were hurt in the blaze and had to be replaced as well. Needless to say, he was done for the night even though he had earned a ticket to race in the A main.
Fortunately, Alexander emerged from the inferno uninjured. However, repairs and replacements took time and he was forced to sit out last Saturday’s race at King’s Speedway in Hanford. It has been four weeks since he last raced and the rising young star is pumped and ready to get back into the cockpit and charge towards the front on Saturday night.
