From Licnoln Speedway
Abbottstown, PA — (May 26, 2012) — “If you run 95 percent, you aren’t going to finish in the top five here.”
So said four-time track champ Brian Montieth after scoring the win in Saturday night’s 30-lap non-stop Keystone Cup Series feature event at Lincoln Speedway.
Time trials and an inversion of six put Montieth on the inside of the fourth row for the start.
Fred Rahmer started on the pole and led the first 20 laps before fast time trialer and sixth-starting Aaron Ott took the lead in turns three and four of the 21st lap. By then, it was actually a three-car race for the lead, with Montieth getting by Lance Dewease for four on lap 12 and catching Sam Hafertepe, Jr. for third on lap 17.
One lap after Ott took the lead, Montieth drove around Rahmer for second. Montieth closed on Ott over the next five laps and was there to take advantage when Ott jumped the cushion and got out of shape exiting the fourth turn of lap 28. Montieth was scored the leader as the two crossed under the flag stand with two to go. From there, Montieth drove away to the .81-second win.
“I was hoping Aaron would get tired and slow down a little bit,” said Montieth, “First I saw Fred take off there and I thought it was game over. Lapped traffic is always a pain in the butt here and it proved to be that way for Aaron here tonight. He had to take that shot. It’s always better to run second here than first in traffic.”
“We’ve been struggling bad,” continued Montieth, “We’ve pretty much looked like crap the past month and-a-half. This was a big morale booster for the team, and hopefully we can keep everything turned around now.”
Montieth’s third win of the season and 29th career win in the Pigeon Hills was worth $5,000. And to top it off, his time of 7 minutes, 52.696 seconds established a post-weight rule record for 30 laps.
Rahmer settled for third, with Hafertepe and Daryn Pittman completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Brad McClelland, Dewease, new Keystone Cup Series point leader Greg Hodnett, Alan Krimes, and Danny Dietrich.
Heats for the 410 Sprints were won by Pittman, Ryan Bohlke, Rahmer, and Montieth, with Tim Glatfelter winning the B-Main. Fast time in time trials over the 36-car field was set by Aaron Ott with a one-lap time of 13.740-seconds (98.253 MPH).
Harlon Leppo of Seven Valleys scored his first career Lincoln win in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature.
Leppo started sixth and assumed the lead when polesitter and race-long leader Chad Glatfelter broke down during a 10th lap caution. From there, he held off repeated challenges from Scott Gobrecht and Stough over the final five laps.
Crossing fourth and fifth were 14th-starting Bill Diehl and Shane Glatfelter.
Heats for the 22 Central PA Legends cars were won by Rick Miller and Shane Glatfelter.
Abbottstown’s Duane Watson passed polesitter and race-long leader Rick Weaver on the 16th lap and raced away to his first win of 2012 in the 20-lap thundercar feature.
Watson, who started ninth, methodically drove through the field over 16 non-stop laps to make his race-winning pass. The lone caution on the 17th lap did nothing to change the outcome as Watson raced away to his 34th career thundercar win (3rd on the Lincoln All time win list).
Jamie Zentmyer got by Weaver for second on the final lap, Danny Beard crossing fourth and Kyle Martin fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Tom Walls II, Jimmy Combs, Brian Walls, Mikey Guise, and Todd Miller.
Heats for the 19 Thundercars were won by Brian Walls and Tom Walls.
Next Saturday night, June 2nd, Lincoln will host a regular three-division show of Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints, Keizer Aluminum Wheel 358 Sprint and Thundercars. Gates open at 5 PM, with racing at 7 PM.
