Port Royal, PA — (June 16, 2012) — Chad Layton of Harrisburg drove to his first win of the Port Royal Speedway season in the 410 sprint car division at the track on Saturday night, leading the entire 25-laps for the $3,000 payday.
Dover’s Coleby Frye invaded and won in the 20-lap late model main event and set new track records in the process of his appearance.
In the 15-lap pro stock feature, Dan Berry drove to this first win of the year and ninth of his career at the track while Jason Zook took his third enduro dash of the season.
Layton drew the pole to start the Aumillers Insurance sprint main and entered the backmarkers on the seventh tour of the lightning-quick oval as a tremendous race for second took place between some seven cars who were racing together on a straightaway for the spot.
John Brennfleck held second as Layton entered traffic with Mike Ruttkamp in third followed by Ryan Taylor, Mike Erdley, Greg Hodnett, Daryn Pittman and Rick Lafferty.
All those drivers dueled through traffic for position at the front as Layton mowed down the slow cars from the rear before his high-flying pace was slowed with 10 laps to go for a stopped Hodnett on the backchute who retired from fifth spot.
Three lapped cars were between Layton and second runner Taylor for the return to action that saw fourth runner Mike Erdley make a swoop by both Taylor and Brennfleck for second before lap 16 could be scored.
But then disaster struck Erdley as yet again this season, he saw a promising run come to an end thanks to a blown tire that brought out the red flag for his rolled racer with four laps to go.
Ninth starter Daryn Pittman then inherited second for the new green but the race was again stopped with three to go for a multi-car fracas in the fourth corner that included Dylan Cisney and Nate Snyder.
Pittman tried to make a race of it over the final three laps but Layton was well up to the challenge and picked up his sixth career checkers at the track by a healthy margin.
Taylor, 11th starter Lance Dewease and 14th starter Dave Ely rounded out the top five.
Sixth through 10th went to Ruttkamp, Dan Shetler, 22nd starter Mike Wagner, Brennfleck and Joey Hershey.
Heats for the 29 sprint on hand went to Shetler, Pittman and Ruttkamp with Daryl Stimeling taking the consolation race.
Frye picked the pole for his AB Auto Glass late model feature and pulled off an awesome thread-the-needle move between Terry Naugle and Tim Wilson as the trio entered the third turn on the first lap to blast into the lead aboard his F1.
And once in the lead, it was all over but the shouting for the Dover driver who earlier in the night set new one and eight lap track records in qualifying.
Defending track champion Scott Haus who started fifth rolled into second on the third lap and tried to keep Frye close enough to challenge on numerous restarts but the Hamburg veteran had nothing for Frye.
It was Frye’s first ever win at the historic speedway and his first night out in his mount that he just finished putting together for the event.
Haus was second with Wilson finishing third ahead of Brett Schadel and Andy Haus.
Sixth through 10th went to Waylon Wagner, Mike Lupfer, Derrick Casner, Lindsey Barton and Patrick Bryner.
Frye’s new one lap track record in his heat race came in at 18.913 seconds and he became the first late model driver to circle the oval in the 18-second bracket. His new eight-lap mark in the first heat race came in at 2:25.49.
Other heat winners for the 22-car field were Naugle and Wilson.
Dan Berry took the lead from Scott Landis on the third loop of the 15-lap Millers Auto Parts pro stock main and then held off repeated challenges by John Heane to steal the victory.
The race was full of caution flags that regrouped the field but Berry had what it took to record the victory, his first of the year at the track.
Heane lost his bid for a second win on the season, instead finishing second followed by Shaun Miller, Harold Ranck Jr. and Kyle Parson.
Sixth through 10th was Landis, Lucas Bryner, Jason Davis, AJ Stroup and Andrew Shoop.
Twin heats went to Heane and Derrick Garman, who set a new five-lap track record with a time of 2:01.542.
Jason Zook continued his domination of the 2012 Juniata Tire Sales/Casners Service Center enduro dash division by claiming the third event of the season after taking the first two.
Zook started fourth in the 15-lap main and drove by Bill Powell for control with three in the books before checking out on the field.
Jared Fulkroad was second followed by John Goshorn, Adam Yetter and Devin Hart.
Port Royal is back in action on June 23 with DMI Camera and Autograph night when general admission fans will be granted access to the pit area from 5:15 until 6 pm.
Free autograph books and markers will be giving to fans as they enter the pits and over 100 free slices of pizza and a fountain soda will be given away to general admission adult and student fans.
410 and 305 sprints and the late models will be on the program.
