MRP up Next for Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless

By Troy Hennig

SACRAMENTO, CA- (7-5-12) – The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout Series heads to Paul and Kathy Hawes Marysville Raceway Park this Saturday night, July 7. A full field of cars is expected to try and tame the quarter-mile dirt track known for its exciting racing. The past two events have produced 26 cars each night at Placerville and then at Chico. The Marysville race will mark the third weekend in a row of racing for the Hunt Series.

Even thought Santa Rosa’s Terry Schank Jr. is still looking for his first main event win, his consistent finishes have catapulted him into a solid point lead. Schank has 201 points while second place Cody Smith has 174. Schank will take his 27 point lead into Marysville where he is always a threat to win. Smith has had a break out season while racing with the Hunt Series. The kid out of Biggs, CA comes from a strong racing family. His brother R.C. is also a sprint car driver. His parents Mike and Kathy had their first date at West Capitol Speedway. The boys started off in the competitive Outlaw Kart racing before moving into the open wheel sprint cars about five seasons ago.

Third place in points is Scott Hall. The opening round winner is no stranger to MRP and should also be viewed as a threat to win the main event. Hall has 161 while fourth place Joe Stornetta is just one-point behind him at 160. Stornetta had some bad luck on the final lap of the main event at Chico this past weekend and looks to rebound at MRP. Stornetta is a young driver who continues to improve and will try to catch Schank Jr. before the season is over.

Geoff Ensign sits in the fifth spot. The round two winner at Petaluma Speedway finished second at Chico and is known for his aggressive but controlled driving style. Ensign sits at 148 total points. Angelique Bell comes in at the 6th spot. The Roseville driver is continuing to gain valuable racing experience with the regular Hunt Series drivers. Bell has 138 points and is only head of Rowdy McClenon by four markers. McClenon will go into MRP as the most recent winner. McClenon crossed he finish line in second place at Chico but was awarded the victory after the winner’s car failed post race tech inspection. Chico’s Travis Moore (128), David Sprigg (93) and Rio Linda’s Kyle Bakkie (86) round out the top ten in the points standings.

The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout Series will get a few weeks off after this weekend’s race at Marysville Raceway Park. The next event is scheduled for July 28th at Alan Handy’s Placerville Speedway. The final two point races are scheduled at Petaluma on September 8 and will finish the year back at Marysville Raceway Park on September 22.
