WORLD OF OUTLAWS LEGENDS KINSER & SWINDELL AT THE PAS APRIL 13th!

By Scott DaloisioPerris Auto Speedway

(Perris, CA, March 29, 2013)  When the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars visit the “Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing,” Perris Auto Speedway on April 13th, it may be one of the last times local fans will get a chance to see legendary drivers Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell in action. Both are closing in on 60-years of age and they will be making their only Southern California appearance of 2013 at the SoCal Showdown.

“Getting to see Sammy Swindell and Steve Kinser in action is a privilege,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said.  “I am excited to see all of the Outlaws when they get to town, but getting to watch Sammy and Steve is like seeing Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb play baseball.  They are that good and just as famous in the open wheel world.”

Kinser, who lives in Bloomington, Indiana, will be 59-years-old in June.  Swindell, who resides in Germantown, Tennessee, will turn 58 in October.  Since the advent of the World of Outlaws Series in 1978, Kinser has won 20 WoO championships and Swindell has captured three.  In addition, they are ranked first and second in all-time World of Outlaws main event victories. Kinser has taken 574 A main wins and Swindell has 289.

“Can you imagine how many main event wins Steve would have had if Sammy was not there,” Kazarian asked.  “Likewise, how many Outlaw championships would Sammy have won if Steve had not been there?  It has been a classic rivalry between them down through the years.  Kind of like the Yankees vs the Dodgers or the Celtics vs the Lakers.  You wish this rivalry could go on forever like those do, but sooner or later they are going to hang up their helmets.  I hope that is not for a few more years.”

Heading into this weekend’s race at Merced, Swindell is fourth in WoO points and Kinser is 12th.  In addition to Sprint Cars with the World of Outlaws, both Swindell and Kinser have competed in other forms of racing.  Swindell was 12th in 1995 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points, has two NASCAR Winston Cup Series starts, 10 Busch Series starts and competed in CART Indy Car races in 1985 and 1986.  Kinser won an IROC race at Talladega in 1994, made five starts for Kenny Bernstein in the 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup Series and finished 14th in the 1997 Indianapolis 500.    Kinser was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa in 2005 and Swindell was inducted one year later.
