Peoria, AZ — (May 20, 2013) — Memorial Day weekend has historically been tied to auto racing. And that will be the case this weekend at Canyon Speedway Park near Phoenix, as the 1/3-mile clay oval will host the Second Annual Salute to Indy on Saturday and Sunday.
The two-night tilt will feature the wingless competitors of the USAC Southwest Sprint Car series along with LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprint Cars, Micro Sprints and AMA Mod Lites.
Both nights of racing action go green at 7:00 p.m.
The Salute to Indy event will have some added money up for grabs for the USAC Sprint Car ranks as well. Saturday’s feature offers a $1,500 winner’s share and $200 to start with Sunday’s main event a $2,000 to win affair with $250 to start.
R.J. Johnson of Phoenix leads the USAC Southwest forces into the weekend with a 43-point advantage over reigning Arizona Sprint Car champion Charles Davis, Jr., with Ronnie Clark, Mike Martin and Bryan Swinehart rounding out the current top five. The balance of the top ten includes Josh Pelkey, Chris Bonneau, Shon Deskins, Justin Quinn and Stevie Sussex.
Johnson has been perfect in Southwest points action at CSP as well by topping both previous events at the 1/3-mile on March 16 and then April 27.
With three wins in four tries, Josh Shipley leads the LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprint Cars into the weekend with a nine point advantage over Johnny Shelton, Jr., though Matt Lundy topped the most recent event on May 11.
