From Greg Soukup
Eagle, NE — (August 17, 2013) — Has Mother Nature been trying to make up for all of the lost racing at the beginning of the season with the fantastic weather the past few weeks? It doesn’t really matter what the reason is, because another fantastic day moved into a great night of racing. Plenty of cars with three and four-wide racing into the features made Junior Fan Club/Scout Night presented by Colby Ridge Saturday night at “America’s Home Track” a night to remember for everyone. And the kids got a special treat when they received rides in the competitor’s cars at intermission.
There were no major instances in the heats or preliminary features.
The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified Feature’s first circuit was led by the 25JR of Gunnar Pike with Matt Boucher’s 5B, the 25! of Trevor Baker and Joey Danley’s 14 rounding out the top 4. Joe Feyen looped the 25X on lap 2 for a caution period. Trevor Noonan spun his #66 in turns 3 & 4 on lap 4 to slow the action again. Gary Saathoff moved the 96 into fourth on the restart. Kyle Flodman spun the 7K in turn 4 the next time around. Saathoff moved up to third the next lap and Shawn Harker got the #40 into fourth. Lap 7 saw the 44D of Derek Hall spin in turn 3. The yellow flag was displayed on the restart when Danley spun in turn 1. At that time the top 4 were Baker, Saathoff, Legg and Harker. Legg passed Saathoff on the next lap. Shelly Andersen’s 5S stopped at the top of turn 1 on lap 10 and was towed back to the pits. Legg took over the top spot with 7 to go and was never headed from there to the finish. The final top 4 were Legg, Backer, Saathoff and Harker.
This was Legg’s first Eagle Raceway win on the season. “I’ve been trying different things for Jet Racing this year so that we can tell our customers how they work. Basically, we’re just experimenting” Legg said. He continued with “I can’t thank Johnny enough. After I sat out a year I lost all of my sponsors, but he stepped up and gave me the chance to race. I’ve always looked up to him, and if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here”. Legg’s sponsor is Jet Racing.
Nick Beckman’s 22 was the first back to the flag stand in the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A followed by the 98X of Garrett Bolander, Robbie Brown in the 42 and Tim LaPointe’s 18. Mark McKinney moved the #23 into fourth on lap 3 before losing the spot to the 94 of Mike Hansen on lap 5. The next time around Dan Noonan spun the #12 in turn 3. Hansen advanced to third on lap 7 and Roy Armstrong moved up to fourth in his 6R the next lap. 2 more laps were in the books when Armstrong jumped all the way up to second. Bolander spun in turns 1 & 2 with 5 laps remaining. RJ Macku put the #93 into fourth on the restart, but got very loose with 4 to go and lost the spot back to Brown. At the checkers the top 4 were Beckman, Armstrong, Hansen and Brown.
This was also Beckman’s first Eagle win this year. “I’ve only been out 3 or 4 times this season, and blew 1 motor. But, thanks to Jeremy Conkel and Conkel Racing I got the win. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them” he stated. “I also want to thank the racing family, and of course my 2 biggest fans; my son Cash and my wife Courtney” he related. Beckman’s sponsors include Spider Race Cars, D-Sign Shop, Playground of Dreams, Dickey and Burham, the Beverage Connection, Performance 66, Muscle Car Memories and Speedy Steve’s.
Scott Bivens led the Kaplan University IMCA Modified A in his S56 with the 3T of Nate Thompson, Dustin Andersen’s 8A and the 4 of “Chevy” Hadan close behind. Hadan moved past Andersen for third on lap 2 and was followed by Dylan Smith’s 95 for fourth on lap 3. Andersen was put back into fourth however when Chris Alcorn spun the #3 in turn 2. Hadan moved to second on the restart and Stacey Wilhelm moved the 3W into fourth. Smith and the 1X of Chris Ableson took over the third and fourth spots on lap 4. The next circuit saw Wilhelm jump to third and put Smith in fourth. Ableson passed Smith the next time around to regain fourth. Lap 8 saw Hadan take over the top spot. Smith again grabbed fourth with 8 to go but Clint Homan spun his #27 in turns 1 & 2. Alcorn looped it again on the restart to slow the action yet again. Kyle Nordquist spun the #9 with 7 to go for another yellow. Andersen hit Hadan on the restart and spun him but both kept going after the yellow flag was thrown for someone having hit the start cone and both were given their spots back. Smith moved back into third with 7 to go and 4 laps later he took over the second spot and Ableson moved to third. Tim Ward put the 4TW into fourth with 1 to go. Hadan looped his racer again in turns 1 and 2 on the final lap, handing the victory to Smith. Ableson, Ward and Andersen rounded out the top 4.
Smith was the third competitor of the evening to snag his first victory of the season. “I blew the motor in my car in hot laps, so we had to go to our back-up racer” Smith said. “I was leery about how it would work, but the Friesen Chevrolet crate motor ran great! It earned me the second spot and then I got lucky to get 1st” he related. His final thoughts were “Thanks to my Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, Mike and Lisa Gocke and Lucas and Mary”. Smith’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, Jet Racing, Active Life Chiropractic, Vrbka Ag Solutions and Woods Machine.
Next up was the finale for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts. Justin Olsen’s 14J led the first lap with Kevin Staack’s 13K, the 30 of Erica Cronin and Nickalaus Jensen’s 48J in hot pursuit. Erica moved up to second on lap 2 and her father Larry moved the #5 into third with Jensen holding onto fourth. Larry passed Erica to take over second on lap 3. Chad Bassinger put his 4X into fourth on lap 5, only to lose the position to the 29 of Matt Moyer the next lap. Moyer moved up to third before the lap was over. Bassinger moved back to fourth the next lap but was put back when Ole Olsen spun the #23 in turn 3. Larry Cronin grabbed the lead on the restart and Bassinger again moved to fourth. Moyer moved up to second the next time around. Erica Cronin spun in 3 & 4 with 7 to go. Bassinger moved up to third with 5 to go as Kenny Roberts put the #69 into fourth. The final position change in the top four came on the next lap when Moyer passed Larry Cronin for the lead. The final top four were Moyer, Larry Cronin, Bassinger and Roberts.
“Today is my anniversary, so first I need to thank her for letting me come out to race” he said. His final thought was “I’ve only got a 3 point lead over Chad, so we’ll see if I can hold on for the championship next week”. Bassinger could be heard to say “It’s checkers or wreckers next week baby” to put his claim on the points. Moyer’s sponsors include General Siding, Luddeman Construction, Kinnersley Grading and Scott Angel at the Design Shop.
Doug Lovegrove’s #1 was a familiar sight out front of the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature with the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt, the 03 of Shayle Bade and Lacey Tuttle’s 50 second through fourth. Bade took over third on lap 2 with Dan Satriano putting the #95 into fourth. Jason Martin vaulted the #36 into third on lap 3. Mike Boston got his #51 into fourth on lap 6. Martin passed Bade for second on lap 8 as Boston advanced to third. Martin took over the top spot on lap 13 as Reichwaldt came back to fourth. The final change in the top four came on lap 13 as Boston moved to second. The top four were Martin, Boston, Lovegrove and Reichwaldt.
This was Martin’s first victory ever at Eagle Raceway, and came in his first race in a 305 this year. “I’ve run 360’s and 410’s all over the area in the past. But, I blew up my 360 earlier this year so I’ve just been chilling the past few weeks” he related. He continued by saying “I recently moved to Lincoln and I was really excited to race here at Eagle in front of the great crowds. The show always runs great; the races are fantastic in all classes. Just a fantastic place to run”. When asked about his sponsors Martin stated “Just say sponsors needed and welcomed”.
Next weekend Eagle Raceway’s 50th Anniversary season continues as Kaplan University presents the final points night at the Eagle Shootout. Who will walk away with the coveted championships at America’s Home Track?
