Hoping to lock into next weekends Johnny Key Classic at the Ocean Speedway, Dominic Scelzi came up a little short, as he finished fifth on Friday night in Watsonville, CA, and will have to race his way into next Saturday’s 50-lap feature event.
“We had a really fast racecar all night, just a little bit of bad luck, put us behind the eight ball,” Scelzi said.
Starting his night off in time trials, Scelzi timed his SE Inc./Red Rose Transportation/Red Line Oil entry in fourth fastest, putting him in the third row of the first heat race.
While the cars were getting ready to take the green, Scelzi was victimized by his outside starter, as contact was made to his front-end, and he was unable to compete in the heat race, putting him in the night’s ‘B’ Main.
With his Kaeding Performance crew working feverishly in the pit area, Scelzi was able to make the call for the ‘B’, which he won, and transferred to the feature event, putting his Panela Trucking/Sparco/Kaeding Performance entry in the fifth row for the feature, on what was a sticky, and fast track.
When the green flag dropped on the 30-lap feature, ‘The Dominator’ began methodically working his way through the field on a track that was not allowing much passing.
Working up into the sixth spot, Scelzi began pressuring Kyle Hirst for the fifth spot. As Hirst worked the top of the speedway, he got a little tight, and it allowed Sceliz to sneak past him for fifth, with just a handful of laps to go.
Chasing after Brad Furr for the fourth spot, Scelzi ultimately ran out of time, and settled for a fifth place finish.
“The track was pretty tough to pass on, but we were able to grab a few spots,” he said. “I have to thank everyone who worked hard after the heat race incident, to get us really good for the B main, and give us a shot at the feature.”
ON TAP: Scelzi will now be in action Saturday night for the Johnny Key Classic, at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA.
