Eagle, NE — (August 24, 2013) — Summer finally returned to Eagle Raceway Saturday night for the Eagle Shootout. Temperatures in the low 90’s gave way to a cool, breezy night as the season points champions were decided.
All preliminary events were run without incident.
Dan Kovar’s K18 led the initial lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature followed by Jarid Jochum’s 5J, the 57 of Jared Cote and Joe Feyen’s 25X. Joey Danley passed Feyen on lap 2 to put the 14 into fourth. Cote and Feyen moved up to second and third the next lap with Danley holding onto fourth. Feyen moved up to second on lap 7 as Shawn Harker jumped into the third spot and Danley once again retained fourth. The next lap saw the yellow flag displayed as Dustin Thayer’s 10T stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4. The next slowing of action came with 8 laps left as the 2R of Don Rinke spun on the back stretch. Cote used the restart to vault back into third as Benji Legg put the 25B into fourth, but the yellow lights were lit for debris. Harker grabbed the lead with 7 to go. The final change in the top 4 spots came when Feyen moved up to second and Legg regained fourth. Harker held on for the victory with Feyen, Kovar and Legg second through fourth. Gary Saaathoff won his second championship.
“The track was phenomenal again this week!” Harker said. “We brought the new car back out tonight, even though we’ve been having problems with it lately. But, I think we got them fixed finally” he continued. He finished his interview by relating “The racing was really good again tonight. We look forward to coming here every week. It’s just a great place to race and win. I couldn’t do it without Travis Lotter, Alan, my dad and Brian Purchase”. Harker’s sponsors include All American Painting, Liberty Safe, Tex Cattle and Midwest Custom Concrete.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main was next. Garrett Bolander’s 98X was first back to the flag stand with Robbie Brown’s 42, the 12 of Dan Noonan and Mark McKinney’s 23 close behind. Tim Kozak moved the 29 into fourth on lap 3. Don Novak looped the #14 in turns 1 & 2 on lap 6. RJ Macku used the restart to put the #93 into fourth and moved up to third the next time around. Macku advanced to second with 10 laps remaining. Bolander went extremely high 2 laps later and Macku took advantage, taking over the lead. John Cain moved to fourth with 4 left and then passed Brown in the waning laps to move to third. The top 4 were Macku, Bolander, Cain and Brown. The season championship went again to Roy Armstrong.
“I’m kind of disappointed with the year, finishing second in points. I’m glad to get another win though, and I want to dedicate this one to Pete Shoup’s mother” said Macku. He added “I want to thank Thom Marsh for putting me in his car again this year. And, even though we fell a little short, we’ll come back next year and end up on top!”. Macku’s sponsors include Skylimit Remodeling, Orion Racing, AAMCO Transmissions, Speedy Steve’s, The Shop Inc. and B & B Lawn Service.
The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds rolled out next for their feature. Bob Zoubek looped his 5S on the first lap in 1 & 2. When an official lap was in the books The S56 of Scott Bivens, Nathan Landauer in the 11N, Nate Thompson’s 3T and the 81 of Mike Densberger were the lead 4. Densberger moved up to third on lap 2 as Shane Hiatt’s 21H took over fourth and Landauer advanced to the lead as Bivens dropped to fourth. The next lap Densberger took over second from Thompson. Dylan Smith cracked the top four on lap 5 and then went to third the next circuit. Clint Homan lost the left rear from the #27 on lap 7 and was towed to the pits. Smith moved to second on the restart and Chevy Hadan put the 4 into fourth. Smith took over the front position with 9 laps down. Hiatt regained fourth with 11 to go before losing the position to Chris Ableson 5 laps later. Densberger passed Landauer on the low side with just 2 laps left and Ableson also got past Landauer on the last lap. Smith took home the win and the points championship, Densberger was second, Ableson third and Landauer kept fourth.
This was Dylan’s second consecutive win and cemented his lead in the season-long points chase. “The Friesen Chevrolet crate motor really has done great after we blew the open motor last week in hot laps. But, it was the open motor that did all of the leg work to get us this championship. All of those second places added up to the big win” Smith stated. He concluded the interview by saying “Thanks to Mike and Lisa Gocke, Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, Mary and Lucas”. Smith’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, Jet Racing, Active Life Chiropractic, Vrbka Ag Solutions and Woods Machine.
The top four on the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A were Mitchell Wachter’s 16, the 14J of Justin Olsen, Rich Eacret’s 48R and Melissa Cronin’s 5M. Chad Bassinger passed Cronin on the second circuit to put the 4X in fourth. Bassinger moved to third the next time around. Matt Moyer advanced the 29 to the fourth spot on lap 5. Bassinger and Moyer battled side by side for the next few laps. Wachter and Olsen got together with 6 to go, allowing Moyer to grab the lead and Bassinger to move to second. Moyer and Bassinger continued to race door handle to door handle as Amanda Rhiley moved her #51 into fourth with 5 laps left. Bassinger got past Moyer with 3 to go then moved up 1 lane on the track to take over Moyer’s line and held on for the win. Although he finished second, Moyer had the slightest of margins and won the points championship.
Chad started his interview by saying “He wasn’t getting past me once I got the lead!!”. He continued by stating “I’m bummed about not getting the championship of course, but if I had to lose it, I’m glad it was to Matt”. “Thanks so much to Sam’s Club for sponsoring our class this year. I think it was the lucky wristband that your wife put on tonight, so thank her too, and the biggest thanks go to my family and crew” were Bassinger’s final thoughts. Bassinger’s sponsors include Higley Chiropractic, Kreifel Plumbing, Warehouse Antiques, Shipley Flooring and Landis Engine.
The Budweiser IMCA Racesaver 305 Sprint Cars were the final feature of the evening. Keith Dragoo’s #77D led the pack after 1 lap and the 24R of Doug Roth, Nate Weiler’s 54 and the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt were close behind. Dragoo got overly aggressive on lap 2 and spun out in turn 4. That moved everyone up a spot and put Shayle Bade’s 03 into fourth. The restart saw Doug Lovegrove move his #1 past Bade for fourth. Reichwaldt and Lovegrove both moved up a spot on lap 4 to grab second and third. Bade moved back to fourth the next time around. Jason Martin’s 36 was in fourth at the end of lap 6 and jumped all the way up to second on lap 8 and Lovegrove followed him to regain third with Bade in fourth. Martin wasted little time, moving to the lead the next time around. Lovegrove moved to second on lap 10. Mike Boston vaulted up to third on lap 11 in his #51. Gregg Bolte cracked the top 4 on lap 14, putting the 00 into fourth as Boston moved up 1 spot to take second. Martin held on for the victory with Boston second, Lovegrove third and Bolte fourth. Boston’s second place was good enough to give him his 7th track championship at Eagle.
This was Martin’s second win in a row in just his second race at America’s Home Track. “This is SUCH a cool track. It’s definitely in my top 5 in the country!” Martin related. “When you get a track that’s prepared this good, you can run the top or the bottom. That’s why I love coming here” he said. Martin is still without sponsors as of the time of this article.
There are only 2 weekends left, but both of those weekends will be packed with racing action. Next weekend is the first annual IMCA Sprint Super Nationals. Friday will be a practice night for any and all classes welcome. There will be a tailgate party after practice is over. Practice will be from 7 until 10 with pit and front gates opening at 5 PM.
Saturday evening’s action sees the first night of competition for the IMCA Sprint Car Super Nationals and will be presented by Pepsi Cola. In addition to the IMCA Sprint Cars the support classes will be the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds and Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. State, regional and national points will be at stake. Front gates open at 5 P.M. with hot laps starting at 5:30 and racing begins at 6:30. Adult admission is just $10, youths 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under are free with an adult.
Although the Husker game is on TV, you won’t have to miss a minute of the action as there will be big screens around for you to catch up on the action.
Pit gates open at 4:00 with pit passes costing $25.
Then Sunday sees the IMCA Sprint Super Nationals Championship presented by Coors Light. The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts will be the support classes for the evening. Front gates will swing open at 4:00 with hot laps beginning at 5:30 and racing at 6:30. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for youths 6-12 and children 5 and under free. Pit gates open at 3 o’clock with pit admission being $25.
