From Bill Wright
September 4, 2013 – Wayne Johnson will be hitting a pair of shows this weekend in preparation for next week’s Canadian Nationals at the Ohsweken Speedway. On Friday night, he’ll run the local show there before heading to Vernon, New York for Saturday’s $7,000 to win Cole Cup at Utica-Rome Speedway. The Knoxville, Iowa driver spent last weekend at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio with the All Stars.
In Friday’s prelim at Attica, Wayne timed in 8th, ran fifth in his heat and won the Dash from the pole. “The car was really good from the beginning, especially in the Dash,” he says. “Attica is a really different track from the norm. It’s tough if you’re not used to it.”
Starting on the pole of the feature, Wayne fought a throttle problem before pulling off. “We worked on the nozzles before the feature, and the throttle was sticking on us,” he says. “I was struggling there, running about fifth or sixth. I couldn’t run the bottom with the way it was sticking, so I was running up top and I spun out.”
In Saturday’s finale at Attica, Wayne timed in 22nd. “We drew an early pill for qualifying, which put us at a disadvantage, because it was still greasy,” he says. “We were able to run second in the heat.”
He would start outside row ten for the feature. “We were able to get up through there to twelfth,” says Wayne. “We were rolling pretty well. There was a caution with about seven laps to go and I was going to be a hero and run the top. That wasn’t the place to be. I ended up falling back to 16th.”
Plans were to run at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville on Sunday, but a problem arose beforehand. “We got there and did maintenance,” says Wayne. “The oil pan had a big crack in it, so we didn’t end up running.”
Wayne has crossed the border and is preparing for this weekend’s shows at Ohsweken and in New York. “We’re here in Ohsweken,” he says. “We’ll run Friday night here, and shake this new car down. Then we’ll take it to Utica-Rome on Saturday. Next week will be the Canadian Nationals.”
