August 18, 2014 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 are going into Season Championship night at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday with nothing to lose. They go into Saturday in fourth place in the 410 standings, just 114 points out of first and twenty-six out of second. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver drove from 11th to seventh in last week’s World of Outlaws event at the Junction Motor Speedway near McCool Junction, Nebraska.
You were at McCool on Tuesday with the Outlaws and timed in ninth quick.
We went out for hot laps, and we were second quick on the board. We weren’t just as good as we hoped we’d be in qualifying.
That put you outside row one of your heat race.
We were in a good spot in the heat, but we needed to win it. Daryn (Pittman) got going a little better than us, and he was able to get the lead. We had a double-file restart, and he still got going better than us and we ended up second.
That meant you’d be lining up inside row six for the feature.
We knew it would be a tough row to how from there. The last two years, the track there hasn’t lent much passing with the heavy conditions. There was a great crowd, but unfortunately, there wasn’t much passing.
You managed to move forward four spots though.
We got a really good start. We were able to get up to seventh in the first two laps. We kind of just fell in line from there. I could see third through seventh kind of strung together, but there was really nowhere to go. Everyone was pretty wide open around the bottom. Going from eleventh to seventh with the Outlaws is always good. When you get into the top ten, those cars are always tough to pass. There’s nothing shameful about that.
What’s your mindset heading into Season Championship night at Knoxville on Saturday?
Our goal is to go in and get maximum points and let it all play out. We’ll try to set quick time, win the heat, and win the feature. If we do that, and other guys have issues, we should be in contention.
It wasn’t your goal to go for the Knoxville title this year, but still you have a shot on the last night.
It will be exciting. I’m sure there will be a lot of nervous people going into Saturday, because those points are up for grabs. We missed a week and crashed out (July 26), so we feel like if we would have went in and did our job, we’d be leading the points right now. We didn’t do that, so we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Ian’s (Madsen) out there a ways, but I think second is very attainable for us.
