– CATAWBA, N.C. (Aug. 28, 2014) – With only one month remaining until the inaugural Dirt Classic Presented by Kasey Kahne, a trio of Pennsylvania drivers have become standouts entering the $20,000-to-win event.
The Dirt Classic podium tracker has been keeping track of weekly results at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown – the site of the Dirt Classic on Saturday, Sept. 27 – as well as at Williams Grove in Mechanicsburg and at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal.
Greg Hodnett leads all Central Pennsylvania drivers with eight wins and 19 podium finishes.
“I think it’s probably as smooth as sprint car racing can be,” he said. “It takes a little bit of nothing to lose it. As of right now the guys are doing a good job and we’re running decent. The way sprint car racing works one day you can look like a hero and the next day you look like a zero.”
Hodnett, who is searching for his first win of the year at Lincoln Speedway, noted that the Dirt Classic is circled on the race calendar.
“Our month of money starts here in the next two weeks, which includes the Dirt Classic,” he said. “We have some pretty big races.”
Danny Dietrich ranks second on the Dirt Classic podium tracker with six wins, including a track-best three at Lincoln Speedway, and 12 podiums.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” he said. “We found some issues and we’re back to being 100 percent. I feel our team is one of the fastest teams at Lincoln right now. We have an advantage going there.”
Dietrich has a provisional into the Dirt Classic feature by virtue of his qualifier win at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Markleysburg, Pa., on June 1.
Brian Montieth has earned a trio of feature victories and 13 podium results this season. He has garnered two wins and three runner-up finishes at Lincoln Speedway this year.
“Lincoln is probably my most comfortable race track,” he said. “It’s our most consistent one. As long as we don’t overthink it.
“For a short track I think (the Dirt Classic) is a very big event. You don’t need a ton of motor to win at Lincoln. You can run Lincoln with a normal short track motor and win there. There’s a lot of guys who don’t run big cubic inches there because you don’t need it. For $20,000 to win on a short track, it’s huge. I think you’ll see a lot of cars.”
A half-dozen other drivers have also posted numerous wins and podium finishes in Central Pennsylvania this season as the region gears up for the inaugural Dirt Classic.
