Selinsgrove, PA — (January 19, 2016) — Selinsgrove Speedway’s new management group unveiled the historic half-mile clay oval’s 2016 schedule of events Sunday evening. The lineup features lots of variety for fans, with no fewer than 10 different divisions scheduled to compete over the 25-race season.
360 sprint cars, the track’s weekly headline open wheel division for the third consecutive season, will compete in 17 races, seven of which will be sanctioned events. The United Racing Club (URC) will make stops April 30 in the 36th Annual Jack Gunn Memorial, May 27 in the Third Annual Kramer Cup, June 4, and July 30 in the 16th Annual Mach 1 Chassis National Open.
Empire Super Sprints (ESS) will compete with URC in the Spring Showdown for 360 sprint cars April 16 as well as a full point ESS tour race May 21. The Patriot Sprints will be part of the Joe Whitcomb Memorial June 18.
Super late models will be on the racing card 20 times in 2016. For the first time since 2010, Selinsgrove will host the finale to the Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek Series June 12. The division’s crown jewel event will be the 18th Annual Late Model National Open sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Sept. 4.
Selinsgrove and Port Royal Speedways joined forces for the inaugural “Route 35 Dirt Late Model Challenge Series” featuring three events at each speedway that will determine a series points champion. Selinsgrove’s challenge series dates include May 21, July 23, and Aug 13.
The pro stock division will return for 19 races, highlighted by the 15th Annual Pro Stock 20 championship May 14. Joining the racing cards 13 times this season will be the roadrunner division.
410 sprint cars will take the spotlight five times this year for “Thunder & Lightning in the Susquehanna Valley” beginning with the return of the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series April 24 in the Ray Tilley Classic. A special Friday Night Lights 410 sprint car race will be held June 10 followed by the Jan Opperman/Dick Bogar Memorial PA Speedweek Finale July 3.
The 410 sprint cars will round out 2016 with special Saturday night appearances Aug. 13 and Sept. 17 in the Jim Nace Memorial 34th Annual National Open.
The Race of Champions big block modifieds will open the season March 19 in the Icebreaker 40.
Other divisions making appearances at the track this season include the 305 sprint cars June 4 and July 3, limited late models June 12 and Sept. 4, super sportsman July 3, and the Mid-Atlantic Modifieds July 23.
Several promotional nights include the popular Pack The Track, featuring discounted general admission, May 7; the return of Kids Night July 9, and the Jeff’s Auto Body & Recycling Center Driver & Fan Appreciation Night July 16. The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing will have a classic race car display at the track Aug. 6.
Selinsgrove Raceway Park, the one-fifth oval located inside of Selinsgrove Speedway’s half-mile track, will showcase go kart racing 24 times in 2016. The 16th anniversary season opener for go karts will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 3.
The Burris Money Series races for go karts are slated for Sunday, April 10; Sunday, June 5; and Sunday, June 19. The 125 micro sprint cars will join the go karts on 19 of this season’s race dates along with special appearances by the PA wing karts July 22 and Briggs & Stratton slingshots Aug. 12.
The speedway’s annual motorsports show at the Susquehanna Valley Mall in Selinsgrove will run Sunday, Feb. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 27. The season kickoff ceremony will be held in the mall’s center court at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27. The first race at Selinsgrove Speedway was held on July 20, 1946, and was won by Hall of Fame driver Bill Holland, who went on to win the 1949 Indianapolis 500. Following a brief closure in the early 1960’s, the speedway reopened in 1963. The upcoming 2016 season will mark the 54th consecutive year of motorsports excitement on the superspeedway of dirt track racing!
