GOLDEN TOLEDO USAC RACE ON TAP SATURDAY

From USACusacsilvercrown

The 50th USAC racing appearance in Toledo, Ohio features the Silver Crown Championship Cars in the Hemelgarn Racing Super Fitness “Rollie Beale Classic,” Saturday’s 100-lap race on the historic half-mile pavement track.

Justin Grant carries the series point lead into Saturday’s race, assuming the point lead as a result of his second-place finish in the “Sumar Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action track in early April, coupled with bonus points for winning the pole and leading the most laps.

Saturday’s race salutes Toledo’s 1973 USAC National Sprint Car Champion, who recorded five USAC wins at Toledo Speedway during his career.

It will mark the fifth Silver Crown appearance at Toledo, but only two drivers have tasted victory there. Defending series champ Kody Swanson is the defending winner and also won in 2011. Jerry Coons, Jr. won the 2010 and 2012 classics. Both Swanson and Coons are expected to compete in Saturday’s race.

Swanson enters the Toledo race only nine points behind Grant in the standings after his 3rd place run at Terre Haute and has won nine of the last 22 Silver Crown events! Jacob Wilson, A.J. Fike, Coons and Aaron Pierce rounded out the “top-five” in last year’s Toledo Silver Crown race while Grant will be seeking his first Toledo start Saturday.

Toledo’s USAC history dates all the way back to a 1956 Stock Car event at Toledo Raceway won by Bud Moneymaker. The first race at the now Toledo Speedway in 1969, a Sprint race, went to Bruce Walkup. Toledo Raceway, where Beale started his career and which operated between 1950 and 1958, was located just a few blocks west of Toledo Speedway, on ground now occupied by a harness track.
