Des Moines, IA — (May 29, 2016) — Craig Dollansky put together a dominating performance on Sunday at Iowa State Fair Speedway, where he led all 20 laps of the National Sprint League main event to become the first repeat winner this season.
The victory also propelled him back into the lead in the National Sprint League championship standings by 21 points over defending series champion Danny Lasoski, who entered the night leading the points.
“We’ve had a great start to the season, but we have a long season ahead of us,” Dollansky said.
Dollansky kicked off the event by setting quick time during qualifying. He then charged from sixth to third place in a heat race, giving him the most combined points and the No. 1 seed entering the $1,000-to-win Nehring Construction Pole Shootout.
Dollansky watched the six previous rounds before he faced Lasoski in the final round for the prize and the pole position in the main event.
“It was definitely an intense match race they had,” Dollansky said. “Fortunately we were able to put ourselves in position to be the last one (out).”
Dollansky defeated Lasoski to gain the preferred line entering the main event. That worked to his advantage as Dollansky quickly took the top spot at the start of the 20-lap feature. However, Lasoski stayed within striking distance and pulled even in turn three just after the midpoint of the feature.
Dollansky was able to hold onto the lead as both drivers slid up the track and he navigated traffic efficiently en route to the victory.
“I felt pretty comfortable,” he said. “I knew I had to be patient and pick my line. In lapped traffic I was trying to be somewhat patient, but not too patient. I saw (Lasoski) poke his nose in there and at that point I knew I had to step it up.”
Lasoski placed second to Dollansky for the second time this season. Sammy Swindell earned a third-place result with Kerry Madsen finishing fourth and Ian Madsen fifth.
Kerry Madsen and Tasker Phillips were heat race winners.
The National Sprint League will head to Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., next Friday and Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday.
