Brian Brown – Weekend in Minnesota!

By Bill W

July 18, 2011 – Brian Brown and FVP #21 racing team spent last week close to FVP headquarters. In addition to some open houses for FVP employees and customers, there was a weekend of racing planned at the ELKO Speedway near New Market, Minnesota. Unfortunately, rain hit on Friday night, setting up a one-night stand at ELKO. This weekend, the team hits two tracks in Iowa (Denison and Knoxville) that he has had much success.

Plenty of FVP customers and employees were present. “Being able to be up there with all the great people from FVP was a lot of fun,” says Brian. “I think they had a couple hundred employees and customers there. It was unfortunate, but we would have had more without the rain on Friday.”

ELKO Speedway is famous for its paved action, but for the past few years has put dirt on the facility for two weekends. The IRA has sanctioned those events. “We got there not knowing really what to expect,” says Brian. “It was a new facility for us, and they added the dirt. There were two or three lines out there when we ran. We were able to qualify second.”

Brian shot from his starting spot outside of row three to win his heat race. “The car was really working in the heat,” he says. “We were really looking forward to the A, other than the format that saw us starting ninth.”

With an invert of ten in the main event, Brian found the going hard as the track lent just one racing groove and he finished seventh. “The track didn’t lend too much passing,” he says. “You had to hope the guy in front of you messed up and you could get under them. I think we were up to fifth one time and tried to make something happen.”

Still, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver was happy with the performance of the #21. “Overall, the car was very good all night,” he says. “I think we had the fastest car there all night long, and we wanted to win for FVP and the rest of our partners. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

He respects the job done by the officials at ELKO. “That’s a huge effort on their part to do that for two weekends,” says Brian. “It’s only their second or third year to do this, and I think they’ll get better every time. We’re looking forward to getting back up there and representing FVP. We’d like to be in Victory Lane next time.”

This Friday, Brian will run with the ASCS-Midwest series at the Crawford County Raceway in Denison, Iowa. “We feel good going back to Denison,” he says. “It’s a place where we’ve been able to win three or four times. We haven’t been in a 360 for a while either. We’re getting close to that 360 Nationals time, and being able to go there and shake things down will be good.”

It’s on to the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. “If everything goes right, we may do double duty (360 and 410) at Knoxville on Saturday,” says Brian. “That will give us the opportunity to try some things. The 360 Nationals are a race we want to win, and we are preparing for August. If everything goes well, we may even pick up a race in California, Missouri on Sunday. They are paying $2,000 to win.”

Brian’s Q&A

Steve Gooden asks: You seemed to take to the track in Denison right away. How similar is it to another track you excel at, I-80 Speedway?

Brian answers: It is actually very similar. We run our car the same way and we are really close on gear. Denison may have longer straightaways, but they are a lot alike. Tracks like Knoxville and Denison fit our style. You never know how much you’ll miss Knoxville until you’re away for a couple weeks. We are itching to get back there, and we have a lot of work to do to be in position to win the Knoxville Nationals.
