After finding success in the Northwest during the recently completed ASCS Northwest Speedweek, Steven Tiner, and his Steven Tiner Racing team headed back up last weekend to take on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the Gray’s Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA.
“It wasn’t a very good weekend for us, but at least on Saturday we were able to move forward,” Tiner said.
Friday night saw Tiner start on the front row of his heat race with Henry Van Dam. The duo thrilled the crowd as they traded the top stop for six laps, as they slid each other back and forth, but Tiner bobbled, and slipped back fourth, putting him in the B.
A second place finish in the B, put his BR Motorsports/King Racing Proudcts/Elma Lanes machine in the ninth row of the feature event, and he wasn’t able to string anything together.
Starting 18th and finishing 17th, Tiner and his team decided to pull their backup car down, to race on Saturday.
“We were pretty bad on Friday night,” Tiner said. “Before we came up to Speedweek we actually ran the backcup car in Watsonville, and I liked it a ton, so it was really an easy decision to pull it down.”
Pulling the highest pill in the ASCS bucket for his heat race draw, Tiner lined up scratch in his heat race, and worked to a sixth place finish, again putting him in the B main.
A third place finish put him in the A, where again he saw himself starting in the back-of-the-pack.
The first part of the race, Tiner was only able to gain a few positions, as he worked up to the 15th spot.
As the race wore down, Tiner came alive, as he began passing cars at will for the final 10-laps.
In those closing laps, he was able to charge from 15th to seventh, nearly passing a car a lap.
“It was nice to get rolling finally,” he said. “The track wasn’t very good for most of the night, but it got pretty racy towards the end of the feature.”
