Meridian, Idaho- The 2016 championship weekend would officially get kicked off for the Royal Purple NSRA Sprints on Friday, September 16th. Night one would be the Tom Elliott Sportsman Classic run in tribute to the late Meridian-area longtime racer who sadly passed away in 2009. Thirteen cars would make the trip from the states of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Utah as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Robert Beck, of Kirkland, Washington, was extremely fast in the main event. Beck would pace the field for the longest time but would be slowed down for a lap twenty-seven stoppage that bunched the field up. On the ensuing restart, both Matt Hein and Bryan Warf would make a pass around him and shuffled Beck back to third.
With Matt Hein taking the lead he was able to keep Bryan Warf back for the rest of the distance to cross the stripe in first place. It was the fourth time that Hein, out of Roseburg, Oregon, has won with the Royal Purple NSRA Sprints in 2016. Hein also would capture his second consecutive Tom Elliott Sportsman Classic victory.
Bryan Warf, from Meridian, was second followed by Robert Beck in third. Roseburg, Oregon teenager Kyle Alberding finished fourth while the fifth place results went to Veneta, Oregon’s Mitch Holte.
Robbie Price, of Cobble Hill, British Columbia and driving for car owner Rod Rendle, was fast time of the night in time trials. Colton Nelson, from Meridian, was the heat race winner while Bryan Warf and Caldwell’s Matt Elliott were the two trophy dash victors.
