YAKIMA, Wash. (September 24, 2010) – As if things weren’t exciting enough coming into the double header ASCS Northwest Championship Weekend with points leader Jason Solwold just two markers ahead of defending series champion Roger Crockett, sit Solwold and Crockett on the front row of the Feature Race, and you have a pack grandstand of fans practically falling off the edge of their seats!
Crockett rocketed to a respectable lead over Solwold during the first few laps of the feature race, but his lead diminished quickly as he approached lap traffic.
On lap six, Crockett got held up by Casey Adams in turn one and Solwold made the most of the opportunity by slipping past Crockett for the lead coming out of turn two.
In turn four on that same lap, Solwold got held up by Trey Starks and Jared Peterson opening up a hole for Crockett to take the lead. However while attempting to surge past Solwold, Crockett’s opening was closed up causing him to make contact with Solwold resulting in Crockett spinning to a stop in four.
“I didn’t want to see it happen like that,” Solwold remarked in victory lane.
The race went green to checker following the lap six incident with Solwold claiming his second ASCS Northwest win of the season and marking the third straight year Solwold has won the Friday night race on the championship weekend.
Fun Fact: Solwold now has the most sprint car wins at the Central Washington State Fair Raceway in Yakima, WA (affectionately called Yakidega by some because it’s a high speed 3/8 to ½ mile oval).
The night started off rough for several competitors in the heat races ranging from mechanical problems to small on track incidences. Frustrations were getting so high, a steering wheel would end up flying across the track. Luckily the target was missed.
The Travis Rutz Hard Charger of the evening was Henry Van Dam charging from 17th to 6th.
Henry Van Dam captured the B Main win. Glenn Borden Jr, Logan Forler, and Crockett landed were first across the stripe in heat race action.
