TUCSON, Ariz. (Nov. 20) – Justyn Cox’s return to sprint cars was a success.
Although he narrowly missed transferring to the stacked 43rd annual Western World Championships feature at USA Raceway on Saturday, the 16-year-old from Clarksburg, Calif., impressed after a near three-month layoff.
“It feels great to be back in a sprint car, driving against the best in the sport,” Cox said. “I’d consider this weekend a success. We were competitive and rolled the car in the trailer with little damage.”
After his performance on Thursday during the preliminary night of the ASCS National Tour event, Cox started ninth in the first of two, 15-lap B Mains on Saturday.
He stayed in the top 10 the entire race, and passed former ASCS National Tour champion Zach Chappell and Henry Van Dam in the final laps to finish sixth – three positions shy of transferring.
“I was able to run the top and keep up with everyone, but I couldn’t capitalize,” Cox said. “The bottom came in really well in the last couple of laps and I found it before a couple of guys. We needed to start in the first couple of rows to have had a realistic chance at transferring.”
Donny Schatz led all 30 laps to claim the $15,000 feature win. Cox’s car owner, Brian Brown, finished 15th.
