Newberrytown, PA (January 5, 2010) – The 2011 season opener of Stock Car Saturday Night will be on Saturday, April 9, with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars and the PA Sprint Series. All point championships for each class starts on April 9. At the end of the season, SSP will crown thirteen-(13) track champions in their respective classes (Late Models; Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, Legends Cars – 3 classes, PENNMAR Vintage Cars – 2 classes, Classic Cars, PA Sprint Series, Road Warriors and Mini Vans – 2 classes).
The SSP track championship point season schedule features 23 point races for the Late Models, Street Stocks and Xtreme Stock Cars not including their respective season ending special events. In 2010, three point races were wiped out by rain. The popular entry level Road Warrior and Mini Van divisions will compete 18 and 8 times each respectively. The Legends Cars have 9 point races. The full-size Classic Cars will have 8 appearances with the PENNMAR Vintage Cars on the schedule six times. The Sportsman Modifieds (Saturday, October 29), Byers Tires Thundercars (Saturday, October 30), Women on Wheels Mini Vans (Saturday, May 7 and Saturday, August 6) also make their way to SSP in 2011.
Open-wheel cars will make many appearances at York County’s stock car oval in Newberrytown. The Super 410 Sprint Cars will visit on Sunday, April 10 for the Sprint Car “King of the Hill” Spring Classic and Saturday, November 12 for the Final Showdown. The 358 Sprint Cars come to SSP on Sunday, June 12 for the Sprint Car “King of the Hill” Summer Classic and Saturday, November 12 to join the Super Sprints. The PA Sprint Series make three appearances on Saturday, April 9; Thursday, June 30 and Saturday, September 10. Two special events for the 600cc Micro Sprints include the 600cc Micro Sprint Speedweek event on Thursday, June 30 and the Candy Bowl VII on Saturday, October 29. The ARDC Wingless Midgets will have three dates at the Newberry Township oval on April 10 (Sprint Car “King of the Hill” Spring Classic), June 12 (Sprint Car “King of the Hill” Summer Classic) and October 29 (Candy Bowl VII presented by J&K Salvage). The Super Sportsman Tour will have two dates at SSP with the Silver Springs Speedway Racer Reunion on Saturday, June 11 and in conjunction with the 6th Annual Susquehanna Showdown on Saturday, September 24.
Making their first appearance ever at SSP will be both the Sidewinder Sprints and the Xcel 600cc Modifieds. The Sidewinder Sprints/1000cc Micro Sprints will visit on Saturday, July 30. The Xcel 600cc Modifieds will compete on Saturday, August 20 for the Inaugural “Heritage Cup” race.
On Saturday, April 9, the pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Warm-ups begin at 5:30 p.m. with qualifying races at 6:00 p.m. followed by consolation races and feature events.
On Sunday night, April 10, the Super Sprint Cars will return to SSP for the Sprint Car “King of the Hill” Spring Classic. They 410 cubic inch powered cars will be joined by the wingless ARDC midgets. The pit gates will open 3:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Warm-ups begin at 5:30 p.m. with qualifying races at 6:00 p.m. followed by consolation races and feature events. Last year, Don Kreitz won the thrilling 25-lap Sprint Car feature event over Tyler Walker.
SSP will begin its pre-season with four open practice sessions for any type of racecar on Saturday, March 26; Wednesday, March 30; Saturday, April 2; and Wednesday, April 6. The gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with practice sessions rotating for each class from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. During the season, SSP will also host Wednesday Night Test & Tune Sessions on April 20; May 4; May 18; June 1; June 15; June 29; July 20; August 3; August 17; August 31; September 14; September 21; October 19 and October 26. All Wednesday night practices will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. as well.
For the upcoming season, the Susquehanna Speedway Park will also continue its popular fan program called “Hometown Heroes.” On selected nights throughout the 2011 season, the Hometown Heroes Program recognizes drivers from particular cities and towns throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. Before the races begin, the drivers have the opportunity to display their cars and meet the fans at the front gate of the speedway. The drivers will also be interviewed during the night’s racing program. Also, all fans entering the speedway from that driver’s hometown being honored will be admitted FREE to the grandstands by showing proper photo identification at the ticket booth.
