– MESQUITE, Texas (March 28) – Channin Tankersley was looking for momentum and he found it at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
The 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, made a furious run in the final laps of the 38th annual Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals featuring the ASCS National Tour on Saturday night.
Tankersley, who was lapped at one point before the yellow flag came out and reverted the running order to the previous lap, finished 13th to tie his career best at the renowned ½-mile oval.
“I was looking to build some momentum for this upcoming weekend,” said Tankersley, who resumes chasing points with the ASCS Gulf South Region on Friday and Saturday. “I pretty much did that.”
After starting and finishing second in his heat race, Tankersley started on the pole of a B Main. He led nearly the entire race before Dustin Morgan took over the lead in the midst of lapped traffic in the final laps.
However, in a last-ditch effort on the last lap, Tankersley got his car to stick through the middle of turns three and four and won the drag race back to the checkered flag to claim the B Main victory.
That result was especially sweet after the frustration a night earlier, when the pinion in the rear end broke halfway through the B Main. Tankersley was leading that race and in position for a transfer to the feature before he was forced to the pits with the damage.
“That was Devil’s Bowl stressing it out I guess,” Tankersley said. “You get on a track that big, you find your car’s weak points and I guess that was one of them.
“I want to thank Miller’s Machine & Welding. Their partnership helped us get the car ready to go for Saturday and that is when we started to build momentum.”
Tankersley will be in action on Friday at Heart O’Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and on Saturday at Speedarama Raceway in Lufkin, Texas. Both races are with the ASCS Gulf South, which Tankersley is competing in for a championship.
