From CRSA
FONDA, NY – The Capital Region Sprint Agency waited a week to kick of their 2011 season at the Fonda Speedway but this past Saturday they were greeted by bright blue skies and a beautiful racing surface. All that added up to a great night of racing at the track affectionately known as the “Track of Champions.”
Even more fitting was the son of a multi-time track champion earning his first career win. Danny Varin, son of defending Modified champion Bobby Varin, advanced 10 spots in the main-event to win his first ever 20-lap CRSA feature event.
“This is our first win in this new car which I think that we finally have figured out,” stated Varin after the feature. “We had trouble with the rear end in our heat race but were able to get it fixed for the feature event. The lap cars were tough tonight but I was able to get by and it made for a good race.”
Jeff VanSteenburg and Brett Jaycox started on the front row of the 22-car starting field. VanSteenburg grabbed the early race lead from Jaycox at the green flag. The two were at the head of the field when the caution was displayed on lap five as John Matrafailo slowed with motor woes.
VanSteenburg held the lead when racing resumed with Tyler Rice taking second from Jaycox. Varin meanwhile moved into the third spot by lap eight and then he secured the runner-up spot on lap nine by utilizing the bottom of the speedway.
It took Varin only a couple more laps to track down the leader VanSteenburg. Varin worked by VanSteenburg on the inside of turn four as they raced to the line to complete lap 11. Once he got the lead he was able to pull away.
Varin worked his way through some slower traffic as the race progressed, but he was able to make his way by them without incident. At the checked flag, Varin was able to amass a full straightaway lead over the rest of the field for his first Sprint Car win.
Rice, of Mohawk, N.Y., was able to work by VanSteenburg in the closing laps to finish in second while VanSteenburg, of West Shokan, N.Y., finished a solid third. Brett Jaycox, of East Durham, N.Y., held on to finish fourth after starting on the pole with Chad King advanced three spots during the main-event to finish in fifth.
Be sure to check out the drivers of the CRSA at our next event scheduled for Saturday, May, 7 at the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y. For more information about the Capital Region Sprint Agency visit the series website at www.crsasprintcars.com.
