– HIGHLANDS, Texas (June 13) – It’s been a quiet couple of weekends off for Channin Tankersley.
That will change on Friday – one way or another – when he returns to the cockpit at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, for the first of two ASCS Gulf South Region events this weekend.
“We’re either fast or scraping up parts off the track,” the 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, said. “The track is really fast and tight, and when you’re running real close to people stuff happens.
“The key is to start in the front half of the field and keep your nose clean. If you do that, more than likely you’ll get a top five out of it.”
Four of Tankersley’s 14 races this season have been at the ¼-mile, high-banked dirt oval with mixed results. He has a win and a third to go with a pair of 20th-place finishes because of an engine issue and a wreck.
However, that hasn’t deterred his interest in the race track located approximately an hour from his home.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s close to home and I just like the track. It really suits my driving style a lot.”
Tankersley caps the weekend on Saturday at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas, which is also an ASCS Gulf South race.
In his only attempt at a race at the 3/8-mile track this season – April 16 – Tankersley was unable to compete because of an electrical problem.
“The track is a really nice facility,” he said. “I just haven’t had good luck there. I can’t quite hit the nail on the head. We kind of play it by ear each time we go there, try different stuff and hopefully stumble onto something that gets us in the ball park.”
Tankersley is in sixth place in the ASCS Gulf South standings, only 72 points out of the top five.
