– HIGHLANDS, Texas (June 28) – It’s been awhile since he’s been there, but Channin Tankersley’s memories are vivid.
The 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, returns to Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, Miss., on Saturday and to Jones Motor Speedway in Chatham, La., on Sunday – two tracks he hasn’t competed at since 2008.
However, his results at both are fond recollections.
“I picked up my first ASCS win in Chatham and I got a top 10 at my only race in Jackson,” he said with a smile.
This three-race ASCS Gulf South Region weekend kicks off on Friday at USA Speedway in Sterlington, La. It’s a ¼-mile track that Tankersley has never been to in his racing career.
“I’ve heard it’s a really fast track similar to Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas,” he said. “I’ve done well there, so I’m looking forward to racing in Sterlington.”
The series then shifts to Jackson Motor Speedway – a semi-banked, ¼-mile track. Tankersley finished eighth on May 17, 2008, in an ASCS Coastal Region event.
“I broke the brake system and the rear end during the heat race coming to the checkered flag,” he said. “I ended up finishing third in my heat race, which put me in the redraw. That was pretty fortunate.
“This is the first time the ASCS Gulf South will be racing there, so I feel like I have a bit of an advantage over most of those guys.”
On Sunday, Tankersley wraps up the weekend at Jones Motor Speedway, where he was victorious at the semi-banked, ¼-mile oval in his last appearance.
“That track is super racy,” he said. “I charged from 10th to the lead within the first 10 laps. I ran the top the whole race except I went to the bottom a couple of times in lapped traffic. Either way the car was good and fast in both lines.”
Tankersley is sixth in the ASCS Gulf South standings. He’s only 38 points out of the top five.
