Thought he was unsuccessful in claiming the Australian Title at the Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane, Ian Madsen did open up last week by claiming the feature event win at the Capalaba Cup at the same speedway.
“It was nice to show up to Brisbane for one final night at before the Australian Title, and take home the win,” he said.
With 45 cars on hand for the final tune up, Madsen timed his Watson’s Transport/Australia Wide Towing/Lucas Oil backed machine in sixth fastest against the 45 drivers checked in.
Scoring fifth and fourth place finishes in his heat races, Madsen would proceed to finish third in the pole shootout, thus lining up EJF Engineering/Mike Hughes & Partners/City Access Scaffolding machine in the third spot for the feature event.
Lining up behind some of the trop drivers in the world, James McFadden and Jason Johnson, Madsen held tough in the third spot, until the race was slowed just five laps into it.
On the restart, Madsen used the low side to get past McFadden, taking over the second, spot and set his sites on Jason Johnson.
With Johnson restarted from the lead on the 10th lap, Madsen began pressuring him for the point as the duo exchanged sliders, with Madsen getting the lead on the 13th lap.
Withstanding a few cautions, Madsen went on to claim his second win of the season in Brisbane, and final feature before the Australian Title.
Heading into the weekend, Madsen was set to run his preliminary night on Friday. Watching his brother, Kerry, win the opener, Madsen then proceeded to time in third quickest amongst the 26 entrants, and then post a pair of sixth place finishes in his heats.
Starting in the sixth spot in the feature event, Madsen’s car wasn’t as strong as it has been in the past as he was never able to work himself towards the leaders to challenge for the win.
At the stripe, Madsen finished in the fourth spot.
Heading into the finale, Madsen scored a third place finish in his heat, and with his point totals, was able to compete in the Pole Shootout, where he scored a fourth place finish.
Starting the feature in the fourth spot, Madsen slipped back initially on the start, as he saw himself in the sixth position. Following and early caution, Madsen found himself battling with his brother, Kerry, for the fifth spot, until trouble broke out just a few laps later.
Contact with Brock Dean, sent Madsen into the turn four, wall, and ended his evening, taking him out of contention for the Australian Title.
“It sure was a disappointing way for our Title hopes to end,” Madsen said. “We had some fun racing with Kerry there, but a slower car got out of shape, and we ended up on the hook.”
