Climbing aboard a Keith Kunz Motorsports midget for the weekend, Rico Abreu put together a strong performance as he scored second and fifth place finishes in the Copper on Dirt, at the Canyon Speedway Park.
Abreu was strong from the get go, as he was the fast qualifier on Friday night, putting him in heat one.
Scoring a third place finish in his heat, Abreu would line his TRD/Abreu Vineyards backed entry up in the third row for the star-studded feature event.
Running on the cushion, passing was tough on the hooked up track, and Abreu held his own in the fifth spot, battling with his KKM teammate, Christopher Bell.
Getting to Bell at times, Abreu was not able to make a pass on the rookie, and he held on to score a fifth place finish.
“It was a tough track to pass on, but our car was fast, and very fun to drive,” Abreu said.
Saturday night, the Rutherford, CA driver continue to show his savvy in the midget as he timed in second quick, and again scored a third place finish in his heat, putting him in the feature event.
On a much more racy track, Abreu was able to make some big time moves towards the front from his third row starting spot.
Getting past R.J. Johnson, and Bell, Abreu took the second spot and set his sights on former KKM teammate, and race leader, Bryan Clauson.
Abreu stalked Clauson for the back half of the race, but Clauson showed why he is one of the best in the business as his flawless performance kept Abreu at bay, and Abreu crossed the stripe in the second spot.
“It was an awesome track on Friday, and it was fun racing with Christopher Bell, and challenging Clauson,” he said. “He is one of the best and didn’t make any mistakes, so we held our own in the second spot.”
Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, ButlerBuilt, FK Rod Ends, Schoenfeld, Keith Kunz Motorsports, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, and Factory Kahne Shocks for their support.
