Alger, WA — (May 18, 2013) — On the night of the Shipwreck Beads Modified Series debut at Skagit Speedway the following racers turned in winning performances in their respective main events, Brock Lemley in the 410 Sprints, Cory Swatzina in the Sportsman Sprints, Craig Moore in the Modifieds and Brandon Berg in the Outlaw Tuners.
Chad Hillier started off the night in the 410 division qualifying quickest at 11.108 seconds around the 3/10th mile clay oval. Jason Solwold and Trey Starks won the heat races. In the 25-lap main event, Solwold won the drag race into turn one with 15 sprint cars flying in right behind him. Solwold held off Trey Starks and Brock Lemley early with Lemley getting by Starks on a lap 3 restart. Setting sail for Solwold, Lemely caught then passed the former track champion coming out of turn 4 for the lead on the end of lap 7. Lemley led the rest of the way, with defending track champion Eric Fisher getting by Starks and Solwold for second. The top five were Lemley, Fisher, Solwold, Starks and Travis Jacobson. It was Lemley’s second 410 Sprint win on the season and gives him three total on the season with another win in the 360 Sprints.
The Sportsman Sprint class was paced by defending track champion Steve Parker in qualifying with a 12.503 second lap. The heat races were won by James Bundy and Curtis Clark. Bundy jarred the crowd with a spinning flip in turn two after losing a right rear wheel. That brought out the only red of the event. Cory Swatzina led all 20 laps for his first win on the season. Clayton Sibley was second followed by Clark, Parker and Bill Rude.
Making their debut appearance at Skagit Speedway were the Shipwreck Beads Modifieds. Seven cars made the first race as weather threatened all of Western Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, Canada keeping some cars at home. It was a commanding night for Craig Moore as the Seabeck, WA veteran won the heat race and the 20-lap main event. Moore took over the lead from Tom Sweatman on the 9th lap. Sweatman held off Joe German for second in a spirited battle. The crowd really enjoyed the first race of the modifieds with the cars hiking up their left front wheels off the ground and close, side by side racing.
In just his second full year of Outlaw Tuner driving Brandon Berg picked up his first Outlaw Tuner victory over defending champion Freddie Vela and yet another podium finish for Matt Ploeg. Berg and Jon Gunderson won the heat races.
Saturday night May 25th at ASA member track Skagit Speedway the Sprint Cars and Outlaw Tuner return for the John Carroll Classic presented by Industrial Resources, Incorporated of Clear Lake, WA. Immediately following the races is a GIANT fireworks show.
