SOMERTON, Ariz. (April 6, 2014) –
The 3/8-mile dirt oval is hosting the inaugural Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown the first two weekends of 2015 – Jan. 2-3 and Jan. 9-10. The 410ci sprint car event pays $12,000 to win and $1,000 to start each of the four nights.
Nearly $250,000 of prize money is allotted for the marquee sprint car event, which already has commitments from teams at Tony Stewart Racing, Kasey Kahne Racing and Larson Marks Racing.
“There is a window of opportunity that some of the NASCAR guys could race and some of the other drivers could race in the United States rather than have to fly overseas,” Cocopah Speedway General Manager Greg Burgess said. “It’s to fill that void when there’s no events going on and the drivers are searching for races to not only make money, but to keep their skills up. There are quite a few big names attending and I’m anticipating a lot more coming on board in the near future.”
A list of six drivers affiliated with teams owned by NASCAR stars Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Larson have committed to compete.
Additionally, veteran driver and competition director Tommie Estes will be the race director for the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown.
Racing begins at 7 p.m. for each night of the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown at Cocopah Speedway. Special main gate and pit gate opening times will be announced soon.
