Boston Creams Field at Eagle Raceway

From Greg Soukup

Eagle, NE — (July 26, 2014) — A well-timed cool front moved through and dropped temperatures to a reasonable level as Kid’s Night, presented by Casey’s General Store got under way Saturday night at Eagle Raceway.

Over 280 children ages 10 and under went home with huge smiles on their faces and a brand new bicycle in their hands as the annual bike giveaway was held during intermission.

Bob Dvorak flipped the #17 in turn 3 during the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car B Feature for the only serious incident in the preliminary events.

Derick Noonan in the 21G, Roger Sluka in the 5S, Josh Kennel’s 71K and the 2R of Don Rinke were the top 4 at the end of the first lap for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature. Jamie Bruce looped the 115 in turns 1 & 2 on lap 2. Kennell grabbed the lead on the restart, Sluka moved up to second and Jared Cote put the 57 into fourth. Sluka passed Kennell the next lap, Cote took over third and Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth. Kennell spun out in turns 1 & 2 on lap 6. That put Noonan in the fourth position. Scott Bivens moved past Noonan on the restart to move the S56 into fourth. Bivens gave the spot up to the 25B of Benji Legg on lap 8, who moved up to second the next circuit. Joe Schidler spun the K00 in turn 4 with 5 laps left. Bivens took advantage of the restart to move back up to fourth. Trent Roth spun out in turn 1 with 3 to go. Legg took over the lead on the restart. Bivens moved up 1 spot on each of the next 2 laps to make the final top 4 Legg, Bivens, Sluka and Vrbka.

“The track has been really great the past couple of weeks. Johnny and I have both cars working really well now, and that makes it a lot easier. This was 2 in a row. With Johnny and I both winning, that doesn’t happen very often. What was really cool was that both of us passed a 5S for the lead and we both took over the points lead tonight” Legg stated. Jet Racing and Toobey’s Lumber are among Legg’s sponsors.

Chad Fegley’s 13F held the lead after 1 lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature with Nick Beckman in the 22, Denny Berghan’s 6X and Russ Specht in the 26X close behind. Tim LaPointe cracked the top 4 on lap 2, putting the 18 into fourth. Beckman stopped in turn 2 on lap 4, moving Mark McKinney’s 23 into fourth. Beckman retired to the pits with a flat tire. Fegley went extremely high on the restart and dropped to fourth. Lap 6 saw Fegley move back up to second and RJ Macku take third in the 93. Fegley didn’t stay there long and regained the lead the next time around. It was Macku’s turn to go very high on lap 16, moving the 23 into third and LaPointe back into fourth. McKinney moved up to second with 3 to go. Macku advanced back to fourth with 2 to go. Fegley again jumped the cushion on the last lap and fell back again to fourth. McKinney won with Specht, Macku and Fegley rounding out the top 4.

“This was my first career win! The car’s been really good all year, and I just ran my race. I knew that if I did that something good would happen. It’s just a 2-man team, so I owe all my thanks to my dad. No sponsors, but I sure would welcome anyone who wants to come on board” said McKinney.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main saw Roger “Chevy” Hadan loop the #4 during the start for a very early caution. Dustin Gray’s 77G, the 11N of Nathan Landauer, Rik Gropp’s V45 and the 8C of Chad Andersen led the field once an official lap was in the books. Justin Wulf passed Andersen on lap 2 to take over fourth. Landauer took over the lead and Wulf moved up to second the next time around. Michael Lund spun the 21L in turn 4 on lap 4 for the second caution of the race. Andersen moved to third on the restart with Bob Zoubek advancing the 5S into fourth. Zoubek jumped up to second on lap 6. Johnny Saathoff moved into fourth in his 96J on lap 9 as Zoubek grabbed the lead. Saathoff took over third the next lap and moved up to second on lap 13. Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth the next time around. Wulf spun in turn 4 with just 6 laps remaining. That made the top 4 Zoubek, Saathoff, Roth and Landauer. Mike Densberger’s 81 and the H1 of Lowell Holland tangled going into turn 1 with 5 to go and both slammed into the implement tire guarding the pit entrance. Holland restarted, but Densberger went into the pits on the hook. Landauer pulled his racer into the pits before the restart, moving Shane Hiatt’s 21H into fourth. Saathoff used the restart to take over the lead. The final caution of the race came when Jared Hoefelman spun the 15H in turn 4. The race then ran to completion with Saathoff, Zoubek, Roth and Hiatt the top 4.

“I started 5th row outside again, and that seems to be my magical spot, because this was 3 in a row! That’s what makes this sport fun for me; winning. Of course, I couldn’t do it without the help of my sponsors. I also want to thank Roger for the great job he does with the track every week” related Saathoff. Saathoff’s sponsors include Penner Insurance, Toobey’s Lumber and Jet Racing.

Spencer Pavey’s 32 hit the wall very hard in turn 2 on the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature, and the red lights came on. Lap 1 saw the 30L of Larry Cronin, Kevin Fearing’s 48, Cole Krichau in the 30K and Matt Moyer’s 29 the first 4 back to the flag stand. Moyer jumped up to second on lap 3 and took over the lead on lap 7. Tim Horsham moved to fourth with 4 to go and Krichau moved up to second the same lap. Horsham advanced 1 spot in the closing laps to third. At the checkers it was Moyer, Krichau, Horsham and the 13 of James King. Krichau was disqualified in the tech area following the race, moving Cronin into fourth.

“On a hot, humid night like this, I have to thank Powerade! It’s delicious and satisfying. I need to say ‘Thank you baby Jesus’. Thanks to Roger for giving us another awesome track; he really rocked the track prep again this week. I also want to thank everyone who works here at Eagle, because the whole crew does a fantastic job. Last, thanks to the fans who come out and watch us every week” said Moyer. Moyer’s sponsors include D-Sign Shop, Kinnersley Grading, Luddeman Construction and General Siding.

Then the Mud In America Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars moved onto the high banks for their finale. Keith Dragoo in the 77D, Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 1BX of Toby Chapman and Richard Weers’ 55 were the top 4 after 1 lap. Horton grabbed the lead on lap 3 with Chapman taking over second. Chapman then took the lead after another circuit and Neil Dvorak put the 9D into fourth the next time around. Mike Boston cracked the top 4 on lap 7, putting the #51 into fourth and then moved to third before the lap was completed. Shon Pointer spun the 20P on lap 9 for a caution period. Gene Ackland moved to fourth in his 14G on lap 10. Eric Reichwaldt looped the 13 in turn 2 on lap 13. Boston climbed the wall in turns 1 & 2 on lap 14, moving Ackland up to third and putting Boston in fourth. Ackland moved up another spot on lap 16, taking over second. Shayle Bade spun in 1 & 2 on lap 17 and Chase Weiler spun to avoid hitting her. Horton spun in turn 4 on the restart to make the top 4 Chapman, Ackland, Boston and the 14 of Joey Danley. Danley pulled to the infield before the race was restarted. That put the 18 of Terry Richards in fourth. Boston passed Ackland with 8 to go for second. Boston then passed Chapman with 6 to go, but gave the position back with just 2 laps left. At the finish it was Chapman, Boston, Richards and Ackland. Chapman was disqualified during tech, giving Boston the win. Richards, Ackland and the 91 of Adam Gullion rounded out the top 4.

This was Boston’s first victory of the year. “Nobody wants to win that way. I know because it happened to me last year. I told Doug Roth that if I won, I would dedicate the win to his wife Robin who’s been having a lot of health issues. I guess that this was meant to be. They are both such super people that I can’t be happier to get the win for Robin. This hasn’t been a very good year for us, because I’ve been wounded so much of the time. Ribs, both knees replaced and other things have held me back some. I had the right knee manipulated Wednesday, so I hope we’re good to go the rest of the year. I want to also thank Nick Bryan for letting me have this frame back. We junked one a couple of weeks ago, so I talked to Nick about getting this one back after I sold it to him. It’s got 30 races on it, but it’s still a winner!” related Boston. Boston’s sponsors include Winner’s Circle, Wood Machine and Performance and Icon Pistons.

Next week Froggy 98 presents Dirt Thunder. The Mud In America Racesaver IMCA Sprints, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts will all be competing.
